Abstract
<PICT:1005458/C6-C7/1> Elongated bodies, e.g. bars of metal, or wire, are de-scaled and machined to size by passing the bar through a die-stock 2 provided with electrodes e.g. annular discs 3a-3d the internal faces of whichare parallel to the bar, and forcing electrolyte in the narrow inter-space, preferably flowing in the opposite direction to the travel of the bar. The die stock is of conical section. Electrolyte, e.g. aqueous NaCl, is forced by a pump 8 to chambers 11 at each end of the treating inter-space and is evacuated from a space 14 to the tank 10 via a filter 17. A valve 16 maintains a high counter-pressure on the flowing electrolyte. The rounded entry at 20 prevents turbulent flow. The bars when of circular cross-section, may be rotated while moving through the dies, which may also be rotated. In modifications, (1) the annular discs 3a forming the die-stock may be separated by insulating members, and the dies connected to alternate positive and negative poles, whereby grooves are formed in the bar, (2) three-phase current supply is connected to three such mutually insulated discs, (3) I-section material is formed.
