Abstract

1,005,340. Double balanced modulators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. May 14, 1964, No. 20074/64. Heading H3R. A double balanced modulator comprises a long-tailed pair circuit formed by transistors 3 and 4 via which two oppositely phased signals are obtained from a modulating signal applied at terminals 1 and 2 and a pair of transistor switches 7, 12 which are alternately biased by succeeding half-cycles of a carrier voltage connected to terminals 13 and 14 to present alternately a low impedance path between the output terminals 5, 6 of the long-tailed pair and the output terminal 9 of the modulator. Upper and lower sideband signals are obtained between terminal 9 and ground or the output may be combined with the output of a second modulator to which the same modulating and carrier signals shifted in phase by 90 degrees are applied to obtain a single sideband output.
