Abstract

1,065,660. Phase modulation. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. Aug. 28. 1964, No. 35348/64. Heading H3R. In a " push-pull " phase modulator, identical single sideband signals are added respectively to two local carrier waves of identical frequency C1 but opposite phase to produce two phase modulated waves; then one is frequency changed by an auxiliary carrier signal and combined with the other phase modulated wave to produce an output at the auxiliary carrier frequency C2 of doubled phase deviation and with second order non-linear distortion products eliminated. The system may be used in a radio relay repeater, the auxiliary carrier being the incoming signal, and the phase modulation adding a further signal in a modulation frequency band not already used in the incoming wave. The system may be used in a satellite receiving several blocks of S.S.B. telephone channels not overlapping frequency, the blocks being applied to a local carrier to produce a phase modulated wave as above. Moreover a pair of phase modulated outputs so produced but having non-overlapping modulating signals may be combined by frequency changing into a single phase modulated satellite output.
