Abstract

1,004,767. Universal joints. RUBBER PLASTICS Ltd. Aug. 31, 1964 [June 12, 1963], No. 23360/63. Heading F2U. A flexible shaft coupling comprises a central resilient disc 1 in face contact with outer resilient annular discs 2, the disc 1 having a series of bosses 13 engaging recesses 14 in the discs, and the latter also having a series of outer bosses 15 for the reception of sleeves 8 and end caps 16 through which pass pairs of securing bolts 9 carried by radial arms 12 on the driving and driven shafts 6. The inner faces of the discs 2 are formed with open-ended radial slots 17 for the passage of cooling air, and the central disc 1 is provided with hemispherical bosses 3 engaging correspondingly shaped recesses in the ends of axial pins 5 inserted in the ends of the shafts 6. By making the depth of diametrically opposite slots 17 greater than that of adjacent slots the webs 18 formed in the discs 2 are alternately of different thickness so that the angular deflection can be made the same for unequal load torques in opposite directions. The discs 1, 2 are preferably made of polyurethane to enable couplings of the same dimensions to be produced for differing torque requirements by varying the grade of material.
