Abstract

1,003,913. Mechanical seals. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. May 17, 1962 [May 23, 1961 (2)], No. 19067/62. Heading F2B. [Also in Division B3] In a mechanical seal for a rotary shaft S and comprising sealing rings 5a and 20a carried by carrier rings 5 and 20 respectively and urged into mutual facial sealing contact by springs 10, each sealing ring is formed in halves having abutting end faces 5e, 20e held in sealing engagement with each other by a loading collar 5f, 20f secured to the respective carrier ring by screws 5g, 20g and having a tapered face 5j, 20j engaging a correspondingly tapered peripheral face 5k, 20k on the sealing ring. The end faces may have complementary irregular indentations 5m and projections 5n, Fig. 4, formed by fracturing a complete ring, for example by breaking it across a sharp straight edge is shown in Fig. 3. The ring is preferably scored at 50 before fracturing. The ring 5 is sealed by packing rings 9 to a sleeve 1 which is secured to the shaft and carries a driving key 14 engaging a recess 17 in the ring. The ring 20 is prevented from rotating by dowels 30 engaging recesses 28, 29 in the ring and in a flange 21 secured to the shaft housing H. The sealing rings 5a and 20a may be of cobalt chromium alloy and carbon respectively.
