Abstract
1,003,386. Channel wing aircraft; screw propellers. CUSTER CHANNEL WING CORPORATION. Headings B7V and B7W. An aircraft has a semicircular channel in its wing or wings, a propeller or propellers mounted to rotate adjacent the aft end of the wings and means for varying the fore and aft spacing of at least the tip of the propeller from the trailing edge of the channel. In the illustrated embodiment, each propeller blade 18 is made of flexible material, e.g. laminated wood or plastics such that at high engine speeds the suction created in the channel 14 overcomes the centrifugal force tending to straighten the blade and the blade tip 18a is deflected towards the trailing edge 14a of the channel. In another embodiment, the propeller is shifted fore and aft under automatic control of hydraulic, electrical or mechanical means manipulated by the pilot. In a further embodiment, the trailing edge of the channel structure is provided with an extension which is rearwardly projectable and retractable with respect to the tips of the propeller. The propeller blades have a different airfoil section at each station and gradually increase in pitch from the tip to the 25% station.
