Abstract

A water-soluble alkyd is made by neutralizing an alkyd resin formed by reacting a polycarboxylic acid, a nitrogen free polyhydric alcohol and an amino-alcohol with an amino-alcohol. The amino-alcohol is tris-(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane, 2 - amino - 1 : 3 - propanediol, 2 - amino - 2 - methyl - 1 : 3 - propanediol, 2 - amino - 2 - methyl - 1 - propanol and 2-amino - 2 - ethyl - 1 : 3 - propanediol. The polycarboxylic acid may be adipic, sebacic, succinic, maleic, fumaric, tetrahydrophthalic, trimellitic or phthalic acid. The polyhydric alcohol may be ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1 : 3- or 2 : 3-butylene glycol, diethylene glycol, pentacrythritol, sorbitol, mannitol or glycerol. The alkyd may also be modified by coconut oil fatty acid. Coating compositions are made by dissolving the neutralized alkyd in water and possibly adding a urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin or a pigment, e.g. titanium dioxide.
