Abstract

Phosphorus-containing compounds are prepared by heating at at least about 50 DEG C. a mixture comprising about 1-5 moles of one or more benzene tricarboxylic acids or anhydrides, about 1-15 moles of one or more polyhydric alcohols or phenols, and 1 mole of one or more of P2O5 and hydration products thereof, e.g. ortho-, meta-, pyro- and poly-phosphoric acids. A solvent may be used. The reactants may be heated all together or any two first reacted to give an intermediate which is reacted with the third. The products may be mixed with ammonia or amines to give compositions having a pH of about 6-9 in water at 25 DEG C. Suitable polyhydric alcohols include glycols, polyalkylene glycols, glycerol, neo-alcohols, sugar alcohols and allyl alcohol-styrene copolymers. The products may be used as anti-corrosive agents for coating metals either in simple solution or as additives for siccative organic coating compositions. Examples are given of their use in solution and in coating compositions containing urea-formaldehyde-butanol resin, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-vinyl alcohol resin, alkyd resin, melamine-acrylic resin, acrylic ester resin and mixtures of these. The products may also be used in or as caulking compositions and are stated to form solid plastic articles on heating, e.g. for 30 minutes at 300 DEG C.
