A solution of plastics material, for use in the production of fibrous articles, comprises between 20 and 35% by weight of the product of reaction between phenol and formaldehyde, between 3 and 7% by weight of an alkalimetal hydroxide, and a reaction inhibitor, e.g. ethyl alcohol. Articles such as paper and cardboard are made by mixing this solution with a slurry of fibre and water, neutralizing with acid, dewatering and pressing at the curing temperature of the plastics material. There may also be added waxes or hardening oils for water-tightness or electrical circulation, or dyestuffs.
