Abstract

Alkyd resins are made by reacting (a) a polyhydric alcohol, (b) a tetrakis-(carboxyalkyl)-alkanone, especially a tetrakis-(o -carboxyalkyl) C5 or C6 alkanone or cycloalkanone. The reaction mixture may also include (c) adipic acid or ortho-, iso- or tere-phthalic acid, (d) a fatty acid, e.g. linseed oil or tall oil acids or monoglycerides thereof. The products are soluble in water in the presence of a base, e.g. ammonia or an amine. In an example, a polyester made by reacting 2,2,6,6 - tetrakis - (b - carboxyethyl)-cyclohexanone, phthalic anhydride, propylene glycol, adipic acid and tall oil fatty acids and dissolved in an aqueous solution of tetiary butyl alcohol and then ammonia was added-a water-soluble melamine-formaldehyde resin may be added to the solution to give a stoving enamel.
