Abstract
Facings for friction plates are comprised of at least 50% by weight of felted, sintered and coined polytetrafluoroethylene admixed with fillers, e.g. aluminium silicate, glass or asbestos fibres or powdered alumina or silica. The components of the compositions may be slurried with aqueous solutions of wetting agents, e.g. alkylaryl polyethers and sodium lauryl sulphate, and felted on a screen or paper-making machine. Surface configurations, e.g. grooves, may be embossed during the coining step, and the facing sand-blasted and treated with sodium naphthalene etchant and thereafter adhered to a metal, e.g. steel, backing plate, to form friction plates. The plates may be used in multi-plate clutches for automatic transmissions.ALSO:Facings for friction plates are prepared by slurrying mixtures of at least 50% by weight of tetrafluoroethylene with inorganic fibrous materials, with aqueous solutions of melting agents, e.g. alkylaryl polyethers and sodium lauryl sulphate, felting on a screen or paper making machine, and sintering and coining the resulting sheet. Surface configurations, e.g. grooves, may be embossed during the coining step. Specified fillers are aluminium silicate, glass or asbestos fibres, alumina and silica.
