Abstract

A heat-resistant impregnant for a panel of resin-bonded glass, mineral wool or asbestos fibres consists of an aqueous dispersion containing (based on total solid) 7.5-88.2% of ball clay, 7.5-88.2% of a metal aluminosilicate, 1-20% of colloidal silica, and 1-15% of bentonite, methylcellulose or an alginate. The dispersion also contains 20-70% of water. The ball clay contains 50-75% of silica, 15-35% of alumina, 0.5-10% of iron oxide, and 0.5-4% of alkali plus alkaline earth metal. The aluminosilicate is of sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, or barium; and may be feldspar. The dispersion may also contain asbestos, asbestine, wollastonite, titania, zirconia, alumina, silica, carbon black, calcium carbonate, barium sulphate, magnesium carbonate, ferrous sulphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, or sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate. The panel to be treated has a density of 1-30 lb/cu ft, a thickness of 250-3,000 mils, and is impregnated from one major surface only to a depth of at least 125 mils, the other major surface being free of impregnant to a depth of at least 50 mils.
