Abstract

1,003,194. Switching arrangements for heating resistors. SIMPLEX ELECTRIC CO. Ltd., and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 12, 1962 [Sept. 12, 1961], No. 32609/61. Heading H2H. A hot plate 10a is heated during its starting period by a boost, resistor R1a with or without the aid of a running resistor R2a which, upon de-energization of the resistor R1a after a predetermined period, maintains the plate at its required temperature through intermittent operation of regulator contacts 11a controlling the current supply to both resistors. In operation of the circuit shown rotation of an operating member 19 closes normally-open contacts 11a, 18 to energize the resistors R1a, R2a and heating resistors R3a, R4a which control bimetal strips 12a, 14a for operating contacts 11a, 13a, opening of the latter deenergizing the resistor Rla. The member 19 includes cams 20, 22 for adjusting the position of the contacts 11a, 13a or the position or stressing of their bimetal strips, such adjustment varying the ratio of the on/off periods of the contacts 11a and the time for which contacts 13a remain closed, and hence the degree of boost during starting. If only resistor R1a is used during starting, the bimetal strip 14a is used to close normally-open contacts in series with the resistor R2a when contacts 13a are opened. The switch 18 may be omitted and only contacts 11a be adjustable, Provisional Specification drawing (not shown). Each bimetal strip may act as its own heating resistor and contacts 11a, 13a may be operated other than thermally, e.g. by a cam or other rotary device driven by a common shaft.
