Abstract

1,002,971. Locking nuts. C. H. HANFLAND. Aug. 30, 1961 [Aug. 31, 1960], No. 31183/61. Heading F2H. A self-locking nut has a slot 46, Fig. 5, extending from one side to beyond the axis to which it is inclined and lying in an end third of the nut body, the spring part 45 thus formed being attached to the nut body by a connecting part left beyond the end of the slot and bearing undamaged portions of the thread. The connection part 19, Fig. 2, may be formed by a linear end of the slot or the part 37, Fig. 4, may be formed by inclined parts of the slot end. The spring part may be divided symmetrically by a slot 21 radial to the nut axis. It may be deformed to an oval shape and if necessary to sustain the deformation it may be welded, e.g. at the end remote from the connecting part, to the nut body. It may be deformed towards the body. If divided, its two arms 22, 23 may be urged together radially; the two arms 41, 42, Fig. 4, may be deformed as shown and their ends may be welded to the body. For increased locking effect, the ends of the nut may have recesses 47, 48, Fig. 5.
