A machine for cutting predetermined lengths from continuously extruded or other preformed material has a carriage 1 with clamping means 19 for engaging the moving material, a material supporting table 29 attached to and moving with the carriage and length determining means 35 carried by the table for controlling the clamping of the material and the movement of the cutter to cut it. The cutter may be of the disc or band saw type, a knife or guillotine or a heated wire. The table 29 runs on guides 2 and its movement with the work is assisted by a chain 10 and weights 11. It is hinged to the carriage and supported by a roller 31 on an adjustable stand 32; extension tables 29a may be provided. A latch 12 holds the carriage 1 in its starting position and is releasable by a piston and cylinder unit 13. The saw 7 is driven continuously or intermittently and is swung up through a slot in the carriage by a piston and cylinder unit 9. Clamps 19 are adjustable on a bridge piece 15 which can be vertically positioned on pillars 14 by locking levers 17 engaging notches 16 and a piston and cylinder unit 18 pulls the pillars down to clamp the carriage to the work. In alternative clamping means for channel-section material, a bracket on the bridge piece resiliently carries a block fitting within the channel section and resilient pads on the bracket engage the top of the legs of the channel section. Adjustable guide plates or blocks 20 are provided. The lengthdetermining means may be a micro-switch, an acoustic sensing switch or proximity gauge means or, as shown, photo-electric means 35 mounted on brackets on the supporting table. When the work interrupts the light beam, a pneumatic system operates to close the clamps 19, release the latch 12, start the saw, if necessary, and swing it upwards. When the cut has been made, the saw moves down, the clamps are released and piston and cylinder unit 41 returns the carriage to starting position. The cut section is pushed on by the moving work and operates a trip 33 connected to a valve or switch 34 and piston and cylinder units are operated to cause ejectors 39 to push the cut section off the table.
