Abstract

[Also in Division G1] In photo-electric apparatus used for inspecting the contents of bottles B for the presence of foreign bodies, the bottles are taken from a conveyer line by a star-wheel 19 and placed on bottle cups 13 rotatably mounted on the periphery of a rotary turret conveyer 12. Each bottle cup is provided with a drum which by the action of friction bands 21 and 22 driven for example by electric motors, on the surface of the drum causes the bottle and its contents to rotate. The friction bands 21 and 22 may be driven in opposite directions to produce an agitating action on the contents of the bottle. On entry into the inspection area between a fixed light source 38 and a photo-electric cell 40, the rotation of each cup and bottle is stopped by a brake (Fig. 3, not shown) acting on the respective drum, thus causing the contents to rotate relative to the bottle. When foreign particles are detected in the contents, the bottle is rejected by known means.
