[Also in Division B6] Punching apparatus comprises columns of punches 37, Fig. 3, for punching a tape 38, each column of punches being associated with a code plate 34 carried by a coding bar 14 which is connected by linkage 15 to a slider 27 carrying a sensing bar 28, the bar 14 being movable in direction B corresponding to movement of the bar 28 in direction A, the movement of the bar 28 being limited by the abutment end 22 of a depressed key 21, and the movement of the bars 28 and the subsequent movement of the columns of punches towards the code bars being controlled by means of cams and linkages on a manually-operable main shaft 19. Each bar 28 is formed with abutments 30, Fig. 4, which are offset alternately to opposite sides of the bar. The abutment ends of the keys in each column of keys are also offset alternately to either side of their respective bar 28, and when a key is depressed its abutment end limits movement of the bar to an amount which is characteristic of the depressed key and is different from the limit imposed by any other key of the same column. The information punched is simultaneously printed on a receipt. Some of the columns of punches may be operable by means of the blank portions between holes 78 of a card 75, Fig. 11, of a synthetic plastic. The ends of the punches are slidable with clearance into the apertures of die plate 48 and are notched. Punchings are collected, in a container 54. Two additional colums of punches punch feed holes at the sides of the tape, the number of feed holes at one side differing from that at the other. The tape is fed by means of sprocket drums 50. Each depressed key is latched by a strip 25.
