Abstract
A steroidal 19 - nor - 3 - hydroxy - 1,3,5(10)-triene in which ring A has the formula: <FORM:1001211/C2/1> is obtained by contacting a steroidal 19-methyl 1,4-dien-3-one in which ring A has the formula: <FORM:1001211/C2/2> with at least two atomic equivalents of alkali metal, and a polycyclic aromatic compound capable of serving as a radical anion precursor, in the presence of an ethereal solvent, followed by acidification of the resulting steroidal alkali metal salt. As polycyclic aromatic compounds are mentioned diphenyl, naphthalene, methylnaphthalene, diphenylnaphthalene, phenanthrene, terphenyl, anthracene, acenaphthene, fluoranthene, dibenzofuran, benzophenone, and N-methyl-carbazole. As alkali metals sodium, potassium or lithium are employed. Preferably a compound that selectively reacts with the methyl alkali metal formed, is also present during the reaction with the alkali metal, e.g. diphenyl methane methylnaphthalene and homologues thereof. As ethereal solvents there may be used lower aliphatic ethers, polyalkoxyalkanes, glycol ethers, acetals and cyclic ethers.
