Abstract
Activated charcoal is prepared by feeding particulate vegetable charcoal into a rotary kiln, the interior of the kiln being at a temperature of from 800 DEG to 1000 DEG C., the kiln being provided at one end with an axially-positioned burner, an inlet for the particulate charcoal and a steam injection nozzle which is capable of injecting steam into the kiln at varying angles with respect to the kiln axis, injecting steam into the kiln through the nozzle so that it impinges on the charcoal to cause a water-gas reaction to take place on the charcoal particles thereby producing pores in their surface, and recovering the activated charcoal particles from the kiln. Direction of the steam jet to a point at which the temperature of the charcoal is about 1000 DEG C. give a product with pores predominantly of radius 8000 to 10,000 A, which may be used to remove fusel oil from raw gin, and radio-active strontium-90 from drinking water. Direction of the steam jets to a point in the kiln at which the temperature of the charcoal is about 850 DEG C. gives a product with pores predominantly of radius 10<\>rA to 20<\>rA, which may be used to remove radio-active caesium from water.
