Abstract
1320137 Uranium oxide from uranium hexafluoride UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 1 Oct 1970 [15 Oct 1969] 50791/69 Heading C1A UF 6 is converted into UO 2 by reaction with dry steam in a first region of a process vessel, e.g. at a temperature of 200-500‹ C., and the UO 2 F 2 powder so produced then being passed through a second hotter region, e.g. at a temperature of 500-800‹ C., counter-currently to a flow of steam and/or H 2 . Excess steam from the second region may be used to supply the steam for the first region or alternatively UF 6 and steam may be injected together into the first region. The process is preferably carried out in an inclined rotary barrel type kiln, an inlet chamber being provided at the upper end of the kiln to serve as the first region, the barrel forming the second region. UF 6 and dry steam are injected into the inlet chamber through a jet comprising concentric inner and outer tubes to form a plume of UO 2 F 2 directed towards the upper end of the kiln barrel which flows down the kiln in counter-current to steam and/or H 2 fed into the lower end of the kiln. The UF 6 may be injected at a temperature of 100‹ C. and the steam at a temperature of 150‹ C. The product UO 2 may sinter to a density of 10À3 g./c.c.
