Abstract

A sheet of material suitable for damping sound vibrations in a metal panel comprises synthetic thermoplastic fibres or filaments embedded in pitch and/or bitumen, one face of the sheet bearing a substance which is or can be rendered adhesive. The sheet of material may comprise a mixture of (i) a comminuted thermoplastic material reinforced with synthetic thermoplastic fibres and (ii) pitch and/or bitumen, one face of the sheet bearing a substance which is or can be rendered adhesive. The comminuted component (i) may be comminuted scrap conveyer belting. The fibres of filaments may be of polyesters, polyamides, e.g. nylon 6, 11 or 66, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl chloride and glass. The fibres, e.g. of polyethylene terephthalate, may be coated and/or impregnated in whole or in part with resinous material, e.g. polyvinylchloride or nitrile rubber. The pitch may be coal tar pitch and may constitute 25 to 75% by weight of the sheet. The sheet may comprise polyvinyl chloride or nitrile rubber. The substance may be a pressure or heat-sensitive adhesive, e.g. an acrylate polymer. The sheet may be perforated and/or the face bearing the substance may be indented. Each indentation is preferably in communication directly or indirectly through one or more indentations with an edge of the sheet to allow the escape of volatile material during the securing of the sheet or subsequent treatment thereof. The sheet may be adhesively secured to a metal substrate which may form part of a motor vehicle, washing machine, spin drier, dish washer, sink, cistern, railway carriage or typewriter. The assembly may be produced by pressing the adhesive-coated face of the sheet into contact with the substrate, heating the assembly to activate or fuse the adhesive, and cooling the assembly. The sheet may be produced by mixing with molten coal tar pitch, shredded conveyer belting comprising woven polyester fibres impregnated with polyvinyl chloride and a synthetic rubber, the pitch forming 40 to 60% by weight of the mixture, spreading the mix into a layer and coating one face of the cooled layer with an adhesive.ALSO:A sheet of material suitable for damping sound vibrations in a metal panel comprises synthetic thermoplastic fibres or filaments embedded in pitch and/or bitumen, one face of the sheet bearing a substance which is or can be rendered adhesive.
