Abstract

1,000,694. Spoke mounting. K. SHIMANO. Sept. 18, 1962 [Sept. 29, 1961], No. 35446/62. Heading B7C. A spoke 1 is attached to the rim 4 of a wheel by deforming a portion of a nipple 7, seating in a hole 3 in the rim, so that it bites on a ridged portion 2 of the spoke. In assembly, of say a bicycle wheel, the spokes are hooked to the hub with outer end portions 6 (Fig. 1) extending through nipples 7 in the rim. The spokes are tensioned and the nipples deformed, preferably to a square cross-section, Fig. 2 (and Fig. 3, not shown). In the illustration the ridged portion 2 is a screw thread, but other configurations are envisaged.
