Abstract

A heat fusible composite comprising at least two components which react exothermically with each other to form an intermetallic compound having a melting point higher than that of either/any of the components is flame sprayed. The composite may be a coated powder, a coated wire or two wires twisted together. The coating composite may be Al in conjunction with one or more of Ni, Sb, Ca, Co, La, Li, Mn, Pd, Pr, Dy, Ag, Cu, Cr, Nb, Mo, nickel alloys and stainless steel, Si in conjunction with Mo or Cr or Cr in conjunction with Zr or Ti. The composite may also contain Al2O3, Zr2O3, Ca2O3, calcium zirconate, magnesium zirconate, spinel, hafnium oxide, rare earth oxides, silicides of Mo, W, Cr or Ti or carbides of W, Ti, Cr, Ta, Nb or mixtures of these. The use of the composites of the present invention for spraying surfaces of Mo, Cu, Al, Mg, Ti or steel is disclosed. The application of a second layer (e.g. of steel or alumina) by flame spraying is also mentioned. The powders may be coated with the other constituent(s) by vapour deposition, thermal decomposition of metal carbonyls, halides, hydrides or organo-metallic compounds, by hydrogen reduction of metal halide vapours or preferably by hydrogen reduction of a solution of a salt of the coating metal in the presence of an anthraquinone coating catalyst.ALSO:A heat fusible composite comprising at least two components which react exothermically with each other to form an intermetallic compound having a melting point higher than either/any of the components is flame sprayed (see Division C7). The composite in the form of a coated powder or coated wire may contain oxides of Al, Zr, Ce, Hf or rare earths, calcium zirconate, magnesium zirconate or spinel. The spraying of Mo, Cu, Al, Mg, Ti or steel surfaces is disclosed.
