Abstract

The jaws 1, Fig. 1, of a gripping device have inserts 8 of titanium alloy which has a high coefficient of friction. The jaws are held against a load 11 by suction through conduits 3, 4 and bores 7, sealing being effected by a rubber ring 9. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2, as a flexible band 20, supporting titanium pads 21, is urged towards an irregularly shaped load, it folds round it and arms 13, 14 fold about a pivot 15 against the controlling action of a ram 16, 18. Rubber inserts 22 provide resilience. Other arrangements are possible, e.g. titanium studs embedded in rubber or plain titanium surfaces may be used. Specification 966,609 is referred to.
