Abstract

1,000,099. Centrifugal separators. AEROTEC INDUSTRIES Inc. April 15, 1964, No. 15583/64. Heading B2P. In a multi-cell centrifugal separator for removing suspended (e.g liquid) particles from a gas and divided by means of horizontal tube sheets 11, 12 into a plenum chamber 13 for gas to be cleaned, an off-take chamber 14 for cleaned gas and a collecting chamber 15 for separated particles, two of the chambers are each divided into compartments by one or more partitions having passages for the flow of gas through the compartments at least a pair of valves being provided, one valve controlling the passage in a partition in one of the chambers and the other valve controlling the passage in the partition in the other of the two chambers whereby gas is prevented from flowing through a pair of the corresponding compartments when gas flow through the separator is reduced. In Figs. 1 and 2, the plenum chamber 13 is divided into compartments 26, 27, 28 by means of partitions 22, 23 having passages 29, 30 which may be closed by sliding valves 31, 32 operated by rods 33. A domed partition 21 separates the off-take chamber 14 from an outlet chamber opening to an outlet 17. Vertical partitions extend from the tube plate 11 upwardly to the partition 21 and thus divide the chamber 14 into three compartments situated immediately above the compartments 26, 27, 28 and provided with openings 34, 35, 36. The openings 35, 36 may be closed by valves 37 controlled by rods 38. In operation, passage 29 or 30 and opening 35 or 36 are closed together to prevent gas flowing through the separator tubes in the compartments 27 or 38. In Fig. 3, the plenum chamber is divided as in Figs. 1 and 2, the partitions in the off-take chamber are omitted, and three hoppers, e.g. 38, 39, are provided in the collecting chamber one under each of the compartments 26, 27, 28 of the plenum chamber. Each outlet opening from the hopper may be closed by a valve 43 operated by a stem 44, although the valve for opening 41 may be omitted, i.e. one hopper 39 is always open in all combinations of the compartments. In another embodiment, the collecting chamber is provided with hoppers as in Fig. 3, the plenum chamber has no partitions and the off-take chamber has vertical partitions as in the separator of Figs. 1 and 2, or as shown in Fig. 6 at 45, 46, 47. The openings 34, 35, 36 in the domed partition may be aligned with the three openings of the hoppers and each pair of corresponding openings is controlled by a pair of valves mounted on a common vertical rod.
