Abstract
1,000,087. Splitting-machines. VITAFOAM Ltd. Dec. 6, 1963 [Nov. 6, 1962], No. 41899/62. Heading B4B. A machine for cutting sheets from a block of foamed material, e.g. polyurethane, comprises a block-supporting table 11 reciprocable below a motor-driven band knife 12, the motor 15 driving the table being arranged to run at low speed initially and at a higher speed during the cutting operation, the thickness of the sheet to be cut being controlled by hand or by a decatron counter, the pressure applied to the material being controlled by a pressure roller 31 and the knife being mounted in a guide to prevent flexing thereof during the cutting operation. The knife is carried by a superstructure 14 which is raised during the return movement of the table 11 by means of screw-threaded rods 26 movable in captive motor 27, the rods 26 being driven through reduction gearing 28 and bevel gears 29 from a motor 30. The knife passes through a guide formed by two pieces 20 of band-knife steel secured together along one edge by a spacer, the guide being provided at each end with lugs 22 to which are attached screw-threaded rods 23 which pass through lugs 24 on the superstructure 14 the guide being tensioned by nuts 25 to prevent flexing of the knife. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the knife is supported between a pair of wedge-shaped stiffeners which are attached directly to the lugs of the superstructure.
