Container comprising a pot and a screw-on lid

The present invention relates to containers used for packaging products, in particular cosmetics, for example for hair care or coloring.

It has already been proposed to produce containers comprising a cardboard-based pot and a plastic lid to be fixed on the pot to close it. Using a cardboard-based material for the pot reduces the carbon footprint of the container, by allowing the use of bio-sourced materials.

In the context of cosmetic use, the container must allow prolonged storage in good conservation conditions for its contents, as well as resistance to transport conditions, in particular good sealing against atmospheric pressure differences. which can be encountered in case of transport by plane, while offering easy opening for the user.

US 6,170,691 and CH 679,770 describe plastic containers comprising a pot on which a lid is screwed.

WO2011/129866 describes a packaging system comprising a container having in the upper part an outer skirt spaced from the body of the container and externally threaded, for screwing on a lid. The container is made in one piece by molding the material. It is received in a support whose upper part engages inside the outer skirt.

DE9303017 discloses a packaging system comprising an inner container, which can be made from cardboard, on which a plastic ring is fixed, having a dual function, namely on the one hand allowing the assembly of the container in an external covering, and on the other hand allow it to be closed by screwing on a cover. The ring has a wall whose interior surface comes into contact with the container and the exterior surface forms the thread on which the lid engages. The lid has an insert ensuring the sealing of the closure. This insert has a relatively complex shape. The ring has a relatively large height, extending over practically the entire height of the container, and involves the use of a fairly large quantity of plastic material. Such a system is rather complex and expensive, and does not respond completely satisfactorily to the need to reduce the carbon footprint.

There is a need to further improve existing containers comprising a cardboard-based body, in order to be able to have a container meeting the requirements mentioned above.

The invention meets this need by proposing a container comprising:

• A pot comprising:
  • A cardboard-based body, having a tubular-shaped side wall and a bottom,
  • a ring fixed to the upper part of the side wall of the body, comprising an outer skirt extending at a distance from the side wall, provided with at least one screw thread on its outer surface,
• a cover designed to screw onto the ring.

The presence of the ring, combined with its particular shape with external skirt, ensures good hold of the cover as well as good sealing of the closure, which can be carried out elsewhere than on the external skirt, in an area which is not subject to the mechanical constraints of screwing. The outer ring can thus be made with a limited quantity of plastic material.

Preferably, the ring includes reinforcing ribs extending radially in the space between the side wall and the outer skirt. The presence of such ribs helps to stiffen the outer skirt, and facilitates the assembly of the cover. The ring can be made with a low height and a large diameter, facilitating access to the contents of the pot.

The ribs preferably come into contact with the side wall, and preferably have a radially inner edge having a chamfer in the lower part. The chamfer facilitates assembly on the body of the pot, during the manufacture of the container.

The ring may include an upper part defining a groove having a U-shaped profile in section, engaged on the side wall of the body.

The upper part of the ring may include an annular lip covering the radially inner surface of the side wall of the body. Preferably, this annular lip has a slightly conical shape converging towards the inside of the pot. This reduces the risk of damaging the pot when mounting the ring on it. A slight play may possibly remain between the lip and the side wall of the pot, before fitting the lid.

The lid may have an annular sealing surface bearing on said lip when the lid is screwed onto the pot. The radial support of the cover on the sealing lip can deform it against or towards the interior surface of the pot, in the presence of the aforementioned clearance.

The cover may include a central part having at its periphery a projection forming a projection towards the inside of the pot, this projection defining said sealing surface. The latter can be defined by an annular bead formed on the radially outer side of the projection.

The ring may include a mounting skirt extending above the outer skirt, the mounting skirt coming into contact with the side wall of the body, for example either by a cylindrical surface of revolution, or by means of ribs or other tightening reliefs made on its interior surface. This mounting skirt helps ensure that the ring is held on the body of the pot. It has a smaller outer diameter than that of the threaded outer skirt.

The mounting skirt can be connected at its upper end to an upper transverse wall extending opposite the end edge of the side wall of the body.

The lid may have a seal that is compressed against the pot when the lid is screwed onto the pot. The seal can in particular be compressed against the upper transverse wall of the ring when the lid is screwed onto the pot.

The cover may include an external mounting skirt provided with at least one thread for screwing onto the ring, this external skirt having a bead forming radially projecting inwards to retain the seal on the cover.

The outer skirt of the ring can be connected at its upper end to a transverse wall which itself connects to the mounting skirt.

The mounting skirt can extend axially under the transverse wall, which increases the contact surface between the ring and the body, and improves fixing.

The ring may include an intermediate skirt, coaxial with the outer skirt, and connected to the latter by reinforcing ribs. This makes it possible to further stiffen the ring and thus to more easily withstand the tightening forces of the cover. This intermediate skirt can extend the assembly skirt downward. It can extend a short distance from the side wall.

The mounting skirt may include on its radially interior surface radial clamping ribs engaging with the side wall. This can improve the hold of the ring on the side wall, and in particular the resistance of the assembly to a torque of tightening or loosening of the cover.

The ring can be welded or glued to the body.

We illustrated at an example of container 1 according to the invention, comprising a pot 10 and a lid 20 arranged to screw onto the pot.

The pot 10 is for example intended to contain a cosmetic product to be applied to the skin or hair, and can have, as illustrated, a relatively high external diameter Dext at its base, for example between 80 and 120 mm, in particular greater than or equal to 100mm.

Such a diameter can facilitate the user's access to the contents of the pot, for sampling with their hand for example.

The apparent height Ha of the pot under the lid may be less than the external diameter Dext, for example between 30 and 70mm.

The total height Ht of the container with its lid may be less than or equal to the diameter Dext, being for example between 55 and 70mm.

The external diameter Dc of the lid is greater than the external diameter Dext at the base of the pot, and be between 90 and 130mm for example.

If we refer to the , we see that the pot 10 comprises a body 11 based on cardboard and a ring 12 used for mounting the lid 20, fixed on the body 11.

The body 11 can be produced in a manner known per se with a side wall 13 and a bottom assembled to the side wall, for example with a rolled edge junction.

The side wall 13 may have a composite structure, with at least one layer of cardboard material coated on the interior side of the pot with at least one barrier layer of non-cardboard material, in particular thermoplastic, for example a polyolefin, making it possible to ensure resistance. to liquids.

The side wall and the bottom can also be covered on the exterior side with at least one layer of non-cardboard material, in particular thermoplastic, for example a polyolefin, in order for example to improve airtightness and/or to ensure the covering of the pot or the fixing of the ring.

The lid 20 may include, as illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, an annular sealing surface 21 bearing on the lip 56 when the lid 20 is screwed onto the pot.

The cover 20 may include a central part 22 having at its periphery a projection 23 projecting towards the inside of the pot, this projection 23 defining said sealing surface 21.

More precisely, the projection 23 may comprise a first slightly conical part 23a, connecting at its upper end to the central part 22, which may be flat and perpendicular to the axis X of the container, and a second part 23b, connecting to the first by a rounding 23c. The second part 23b can extend outwards, as visible in Figures 6 and 7 in particular, with a first slope, on a first segment 23d, then with a second slope lower than the first on a second segment 23e, then in a quasi-vertical manner on a third segment 23f. This last segment has a slight annular boss 23g defining the sealing surface 21 bearing against the sealing lip 56 of the ring 12.

The first segment 23d has for example a slope of 16° with the X axis, the second segment 23e a slope of 45° and the third 23f a slope of 1.6°. For example, boss 23g has a slope of 5° towards the outside.

The cover 20 has an outer mounting skirt 25, of diameter Db, provided internally with a thread 27, arranged to screw onto the outer skirt 18 of the ring 12.

The outer skirt 25 is connected to the upper end of the third segment 23f of the projection 23 by an upper wall 26 which extends perpendicular to the axis X of the container.

The cover 20 comprises reinforcing ribs 28, oriented radially, equally distributed angularly around the axis of the container, as visible on the . These ribs 28 connect to the interior surface of the skirt 25, above the thread 27, and to the lower face of the upper wall 26.

The ribs 28 can come axially to bear against the transverse wall 19 of the ring 12 at the end of the screwing of the cover 20, as illustrated in the . The reinforcing ribs 30 of the ring 12 and the ribs 28 of the cover 20 contribute to stiffening them and ensuring good mechanical resistance to the assembly with respect to the forces exerted during handling of the container and during a transport by plane, where the container may be exposed to a pressure differential between the inside and the outside.

The height Hp of the pot is for example greater than 50mm, and less than 100mm.

The sealing of the closure of the container can be achieved differently without departing from the scope of the present invention.

We will thus describe, with reference to Figures 9 to 11, other examples of embodiment of the container, in which the cover 20 carries a flat seal 40 in the form of a disc.

In the example of Figures 9 and 10, the cover 20 has a simpler shape than in the example of the , with an upper wall 26 in the shape of a disc, without the projection 23 towards the inside of the pot, and an outer skirt 25 for mounting on the ring without the reinforcing ribs 28.

The skirt 25 may include, as illustrated, an annular bead 61 which projects inwards, and defines a groove 29 in which the periphery of the seal 40 is received, which ensures its retention on the cover. If necessary, the seal 40 can also be glued to the inside face of the cover.

The upper part of the ring 12 is also modified, and the mounting skirt 16 has a free edge 42 at its upper end. The upper wall 17 and the lip 56 of the example of the are deleted.

The free edge 42 is located higher than the upper edge of the wall 13 of the body 11, so that the mounting skirt 16 projects above the body 11 and can be applied against the seal 40 when the cover is in the closed position. The seal 40 is then pinched between the mounting skirt 16 and the lower face of the upper wall 26 of the cover.

In the example of the , the mounting skirt 16 is extended at its upper end by a return 43, directed radially inwards, which bears axially against the upper edge of the wall 13 of the body 11.

The seal 40 is compressed, in this example, between the return 43 and the lower face of the upper wall 26, in the closed position.

The presence of the return 43 is advantageous because it constitutes an end stop when mounting the ring on the body 11, whereas in the example of the the precision of the positioning of the ring 10 on the body 11 depends on the use of positioning means external to the ring 10 and to the body 11.

The ring variant illustrated in Figures 12 and 13 differs from that shown in by the presence of an intermediate skirt 116, located in the extension of the mounting skirt 16, extending downwards under the wall 19.

Reinforcement ribs 130, oriented radially, connect the outer skirt 18 to the intermediate skirt 116. These reinforcing ribs can extend axially, as illustrated, over the entire height of the intermediate skirt 116, and connect superiorly to the wall 19.

The intermediate skirt 116 may have a chamfer 117 at its lower end, facilitating the insertion of the wall 13 when mounting the ring thereon.
