Il se déplie à l'ouverture 20 de l'emballage (fig. 2), ou bien constitue un bord de l'emballage (fig. 1) et permet de couper le pain pour l'ouvrir et y introduire la préparation à sandwich. Les aliments constituant la préparation peuvent être agencés, dans l'emballage, de manière à former un bloc compact et facile à disposé dans le pain ouvert. L'ensemble récipient (1) et couteau (2) peuvent être une seule et même pièce 25 obtenue par injection plastique, par thermoformage, ou par mise en forme de toute matière de qualité alimentaire.
