Abstract

A display apparatus includes a frame (1) adapted to engage and support the edge of an illustration (12), a housing (3) behind the frame (1) defining a cavity disposed behind the plane occupied by the illustrating during use of the apparatus, a lighting means located in the cavity, a power source for the lighting means, the lighting means being arranged to provide backlit illumination for an illustration (12) in the frame (1), wherein the illuminating means comprises an elongate array of lamps arranged longitudinally in a light transmitting mounting tube.

Description

The present invention relates to an illuminated illustration frame of the type
  wherein an illustration, for example, a photograph, a drawing, a painting, an impression or the like, which is referred to below as an illustration, is mounted with the edges engaged in a frame and with a lamp or a light behind the illustration to illuminate the image. According to the present invention, a display apparatus includes a frame adapted to engage and support the edges of an illustration, a housing behind the frame defining a cavity disposed behind the plane occupied by the artwork during a period of time. use of the apparatus, a lighting means located in the cavity, a power source for the lighting means, the lighting means being arranged to provide backlit illumination for an illustration in the frame, wherein the illuminating means comprises an elongate array of lamps arranged longitudinally in a light transmitting mounting tube. In a preferred embodiment, the array is located in a tubular diffuser, the diffuser having a diameter smaller than the diameter of the mounting tube so that the diffuser can be located within the mounting tube. The illuminating means may comprise a linear array of light-emitting diodes or other bulbs mounted in openings in a laminar support. A reflector may be provided behind the lighting means. The reflector may comprise a sheet or film of metal, preferably an aluminum sheet or sheet of metallized paper or plastic material. The diffuser and mounting tube may be securely attached at or adjacent to each end by screw clamps or other convenient fasteners. In preferred embodiments, the ends of the tube and diffuser are open to allow convective heat dispersion during use. The power supply may include a battery or array of batteries. Alternatively, or in addition, a connection to a mains or ac supply or external low voltage direct current can be provided.
A light sensor or a photosensitive detector may be arranged to interrupt the circuit during bright light conditions so that the display is illuminated only during twilight or night conditions in order to avoid a waste of light. power supply. In an alternative embodiment, one or more outwardly facing surfaces of the frame or housing may incorporate or include a photovoltaic cell or a photovoltaic cell array. Such an arrangement is adapted to supplement or reduce the need for a battery or external power supply. The illuminated illustration frame device shown in the drawings comprises a frame 1 made of wood, plastic or other material. The frame can be rectangular, square or some other shape. A footnote 2 is attached to a rectangular housing 3 securely attached to the back of the frame. The housing is securely releasably secured by rotatable stirrups or clamps 4 as shown in FIG. 3. The housing includes a box 5 adapted to receive a plurality of stacks 6, the box being closed by a door or removable cover 7. The housing may comprise two attachment devices 28 for suspending the frame to a wall by means of a hook or a nail.
A light sensor 8, an on / off switch 9 and a DC power connector 10 are also provided in the housing. The mounting of the illustration within the frame is shown in Fig. 4. An acrylic or glass cover sheet 11 is placed in the insertion slot in the frame and Fig. 12 is placed on leaf. The housing is closed by means of an acrylic sheet 13 securely attached to the front opening of the housing 3 by means of screws, clamps or other fasteners, and the housing assembly is securely fixed in position by rotation. tongs 4.
Figures 5 and 6 show the lighting assembly. A linear array of light-emitting diodes 15 mounted in a laminar strip or a printed circuit board 16 is inserted into a tubular diffuser 17, composed of, for example, an acrylic polymer or an opaque or translucent paper. The diffuser and lamp assembly is inserted into an outer acrylic mounting tube 18 securely attached to the floor of the housing by means of clamps 19. Preferably, the tube is axially and centrally disposed with respect to the housing. A reflective sheet or layer 35 is provided to direct radiation forward. The sheet can be composed of an aluminum film, other metallic materials or a metallized polymeric material or paper. Figure 7 illustrates the control circuits of the device. A sensor circuit board assembly (PCBA) is arranged to turn on the lamps when a signal from the light sensor indicates that the ambient light intensity has dropped below a predetermined value, for example, at dusk. The circuits are protected by a plate 27 forming an inclined cover. The battery compartment is shown in Fig. 8. The alkaline cells or rechargeable batteries 22 are conventionally received between connector terminals and the assembly is protected by an inclined cover plate 24 which can be securely attached to the connector. using screws or other fasteners.
The two cover plates 2.4 and 27 form a channel for receiving the illumination unit to increase forward light reflection through the illustration during use. The printed circuit board assembly is shown in FIG. 9. A transistor 25 and a microprocessor are mounted on a printed circuit board by means of screws (not shown) or fasteners. Figure 10 shows the LED circuit board assembly. The printed circuit board 30 has a plurality of, for example, four, openings in which white LEDs 31 are mounted, each LED having a resistor 32. The LEDs are arranged to emit light on both sides of the printed circuit board strip, providing a solid and economical arrangement. Fig. 11 shows an alternative embodiment. This includes a solar panel of photovoltaic cells 33 so that the batteries are recharged during bright light conditions. Fig. 12 shows an LED circuit board assembly, a diffuser and a mounting tube, concentrically, to form the lighting unit. Fig. 13 shows front and side elevations of the LED array showing that the LEDs are disposed on each side of the printed circuit board strip. Figure 14 is a circuit diagram. Claims (6)

  1.   A display apparatus comprising a frame (1) adapted to engage and support the edges of an illustration (12), a housing (3) behind the frame (1) defining a cavity disposed behind the plane occupied by the illustration (12) during use of the apparatus, a lighting means located in the cavity, a power source for the lighting means, the lighting means being arranged to provide illumination backlit for an illustration (12) in the frame (1), wherein the illuminating means comprises an elongated array of lamps arranged longitudinally in a light transmitting mounting tube (18).
  2.   An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the array is located in a tubular diffuser (17), the diffuser (17) having a diameter smaller than the diameter of the mounting tube (18) so that the diffuser (17) can be located inside the mounting tube (18).
  3.   An apparatus according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the illuminating means comprises a linear array of light-emitting diodes (15,31) or other bulbs mounted in respective openings in a laminar support. 25
  4.   Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein a reflector is located behind the illuminating means.
  5.   An apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, comprising a light sensor (8) or a photosensitive detector which can be arranged to interrupt the circuit during bright light conditions.
  6.   Apparatus according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the frame (1) or housing (3) comprises an array of photovoltaic cells (33). 20
