Si celui-ci manoeuvre le chariot en l'accompagnant, la plateforme est avantageusement rabattue contre le châssis, ainsi que les bras garde-corps. Pour cela les bras sont articulés habituellement sur une partie haute du châssis, et dans certaines réalisations, il s'encastrent dans des alvéoles prévues à cet effet. Il est en effet important que le débattement du timon de manoeuvre du chariot ne soit pas gêné par les bras en question. Quand le timon est monté en position basse, voir en position intermédiaire sur le châssis, il est difficile de fixer des bras escamotables sur le haut de l'appareil, d'autant que souvent le corps principal du chariot ne se développe guère en hauteur pour permettre au conducteur d'avoir une bonne visibilité vers l'avant.
