On connaît un feu pour véhicule automobile comportant une lampe, un réflecteur parabolique au foyer duquel se trouve la lampe, et un boîtier délimitant une ouverture ou plage éclairante pour la sortie des rayons lumineux issus directement de la lampe ou réfléchis par le réflecteur. Cet agencement offre un nombre limité de possibilités pour configurer l'ouverture du feu. Or, il existe aujourd'hui une demande pour des configurations de plage éclairante plus originales et en rapport avec le style du véhicule. Il est également souhaitable de pouvoir varier ces configurations sans augmenter l'encombrement du feu ni son prix de revient.
