Abstract

The invention concerns a method for making laminated articles which consists in arranging back to back, between a standard press plates (1a, 1b), two stacks (2a, 2b) comprising each a plurality of layered sheets impregnated with resin, in particular phenolic resin, to constitute core of the produced board, said sheets being coated with a complex (3a, 3b), arranged opposite the press plates (1a, 1b), and designed to constitute the decorative surface of the laminated product. The invention is characterised in that the two contacting surfaces of each of the two stacks, consist of a paper sheet (7a, 7b) forming a barrier preventing the resin from migrating during the pressing operation thereby enabling the subsequent separation of the two stacks when the laminate is formed, each sheet, however, remaining integrated on the back side of the stack with which it is associated.

Description

PROCEDE POUR LA REALISATION D'ARTICLES STRATIFIES ET
FEUILLES STRATIFIEES OBTENUES PAR LA MISE EN OEUVRE D'UN
TEL PROCEDE.
PROCESS FOR PRODUCING LAMINATE ARTICLES AND
LAMINATE SHEETS OBTAINED BY THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A
Such a process.

In many technical sectors, in particular in the field of furniture, to achieve the finishing of the panels, plates or sheets are used, called laminated or laminated, which generally consist of a complex material formed of a plurality of superimposed sheets, kraft paper, decorated paper in particular, impregnated with a resin, thermosetting in particular, for example of the phenolic type, and which are assembled together by hot pressing.

Above this stack is placed a sheet of decorative paper, printed or of solid color, which is impregnated with a thermosetting resin which, after heat treatment, is substantially transparent and colorless.

In general, this decorative sheet is covered with a so-called overlay surface layer making it possible to produce a transparent protective coating.

In the following description, the invention will be described for the production of laminated articles obtained from thermosetting resins, but it is not excluded that such a process could also be implemented with other types of resin.

FR-A-2 267 206.
Such laminate structures have been known and developed for a very long time, as is apparent in particular from US Pat. No. 3,616,021 or from the patent
FR-A-2 267 206.

Currently, in order to increase production rates, laminates are generally produced by pressing and simultaneously processing several pairs of laminates, each consisting of two stacks of elementary layers, mounted in opposition, so that the layers intended to constitute the decoration and the wear layer are facing the press plates and the reverse sides are facing each other in the middle part.

To allow the simultaneous production of the two laminates, it is therefore essential to have between the stacks a separation sheet constituted for example by a plastic film based on polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or any other suitable plastic material or a layer of treated separator paper. non-stick on one of its faces.

Although it has been envisaged to replace these separating elements by a coating layer, based on alginate for example, during the impregnation of kraft papers, the most widespread solution currently consists in using as separating element a paper uniface non-stick treatment.

If the laminated sheets obtained with such a technique can be separated from one another easily after pressing, the reverse side of each of the two laminates obtained must be sanded with a view to their lamination with the surface of the structure to be covered. .

Consequently, this sanding operation increases the manufacturing costs as well as the production of waste, and is difficult to carry out if one wishes to obtain a homogeneous production and a constant and reproducible thickness of the plates.

However, we have found, and this is the subject of the present invention, a simple and effective process which not only simplifies the manufacturing process of such laminated articles, in particular by the fact that it allows the elimination of sanding. on the back of the article produced, but which also reduces production costs and makes it possible to obtain a new type of laminate, the reverse side of which is perfectly flat, the front side comprising the decor which can either be flat or have an appearance decorative with hollows and reliefs.

In general, the invention therefore relates to a method for obtaining laminated articles which consists in placing, back to back, between the plates of a conventional press, two stacks each comprising a plurality of superimposed sheets impregnated of resin, phenolic in particular, intended to constitute the core of the plate produced, these said sheets being covered with a complex, arranged facing the press plates, also made from sheets intended to form the decorative surface layer of the laminate product, and it is characterized in that the two faces in contact with each of the two stacks, consist of a sheet of paper forming a barrier to the migration of the resin during the pressing operation thus allowing the subsequent separation of the two stacks when the laminate is formed, each sheet however remaining integrated to the back of the stack with which it is associated.

As a type of paper which is particularly suitable for implementing the method according to the invention, preferably use a parchment paper, or any other equivalent sheet structure which, by its nature, has great resistance, good flexibility, good cohesion, barrier form against the migration of a large number of products and has a good ability to laminate, the barrier property was not, however, surprisingly enough to prevent good adhesion from said parchment paper to the rest of the laminate.

Indeed, after pressing and heat treatment and separation of the two plates produced, it has been found that the parchment paper remains integrated on the reverse side while making the two sides of the two laminates produced non-adherent to each other during the pressing operation.

Furthermore, unlike the methods currently used, it is not necessary to remove this reverse side or to sand it during the final use of the laminate.

The invention and the advantages which it brings will however be better understood thanks to the concrete example of embodiment which follows, given below by way of indication, but not limiting, and which is illustrated by the appended diagram.

Exemple
Example
On a conventional pressing installation, there are, between the two plates (la, lb) of a conventional press, two stacks (2a, 2b) of sheets arranged back to back and which each comprise a plurality of superimposed sheets impregnated with resin phenolic intended to constitute the core of the plate produced, these said sheets being covered with a complex (3a, 3b) also based on sheets intended to form the decorative surface layer of the laminate produced.

In the concrete example, the stack (2a, 2b) conventionally consists of n sheets of kraft paper impregnated with thermosetting phenolformaldehyde resin above which is stacked the stack (3a, 3b) intended to form the decorative surface layer, stack which consists of a layer (4a, 4b) called an underlay consisting of an opaque paper impregnated with melamine resin placed below a layer (5a, 5b) of decor paper, for example of solid color, also impregnated with '' a thermosetting melamine resin covered with a layer (6a, 6b) called overlay consisting of a thin paper, impregnated and also coated with melamine resin.

Between these two stacks, in accordance with the invention, are arranged two sheets (7a, 7b) of parchment paper.

These sheets of parchment paper generally have a weight of between 120 g / m2 and 150 g / m2. If it is conceivable to use papers having a weight outside this range, in general below 120 g / m2, there is however a risk of complete penetration of the resin through the thickness of the paper. , and above 150 g / m2, there is no improvement in the characteristics of the final product obtained.

However, for certain applications, it could be envisaged to use a paper of more than 150 g / m2, in particular to have a gain in thickness.

These sheets of greaseproof paper are obtained in a conventional manner and are essentially based on cellulosic fibers, the sheet obtained having undergone a treatment with sulfuric acid making it possible to partially dissolve the cellulose and to make the paper waterproof, said sheet being, after treatment , rinsed and neutralized.

The stacks are thus arranged between the two plates (la, lb) of a press, the stratification operation is carried out in a conventional manner by exerting a pressure of the order of 70 to 100 bars, the assembly being heat treated at a temperature between 130 and 1600C for a period which can range from 15 to 25 minutes.

After completion of the laminating cycle, the laminated plates are extracted from the press and separated from each other.

Each plate has a final thickness which is a function of the number of sheets constituting the stack, a thickness which in general is between 0.7 and several millimeters.

By proceeding in this way, laminated sheets are obtained which have, on their reverse side, a surface layer constituted by the parchment paper which has ensured the separation of the two sheets of the laminate.

The role of separator of the prior art is therefore fulfilled by a layer of paper which is perfectly integrated inside the structure of the complex.

Such a surface layer allows the material to be used directly without sanding the backing and facilitates laminating with the surfaces to which it is to be attached, taking into account the suitability of greaseproof papers for bonding with aqueous adhesives.

d'éviter des traitements et manipulations ultérieurs du fait de l'absence de films séparateurs devant être retirés après chaque opération de stratification dans les procédés classiques utilisés à ce jour;
In addition, such a procedure allows:
possibly saving one or more layers of kraft paper intended to form the core of the plate, due to the thickness provided by the layer of parchment paper integrated on the reverse side
avoid subsequent processing and handling due to the absence of separating films to be removed after each lamination operation in the conventional methods used to date;
to improve the flexibility of the laminate complex, facilitating its shaping during final use taking into account the presence of the layer of parchment paper on the back of the laminate.

Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiment described above, but it covers all the variants produced in the same spirit. Thus, it could be envisaged to use a sheet other than parchment paper to form a barrier to the migration of the resin, provided however that such a sheet has characteristics similar to those of parchment paper.
