Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a device for connecting ends of optical fiber cables.
There are known devices for connecting two ends of optical fiber cables comprising a housing on which the ends of the cables are fixed, the optical fibers being connected by connecting members arranged inside the housing.
In known connection devices, optical fiber cables include support members such as grooved tubes or rods which are bulky, not very flexible and therefore cannot be easily coiled inside the housing. In existing connection devices, the optical fibers are therefore generally individualized from the end of the cables fixed to the housing. In order to have a length of optical fiber sufficient to handle the fibers during a connection, it is therefore necessary to coil the fibers. However, the individual fibers are fragile and it is therefore not possible to wrap a large number of individual fibers directly in the housing. In existing connection devices, cassettes are provided with holding members for coiling a series of optical fibers without damaging them as described in particular in document EP-A-389,206. However, the cassettes have large dimensions relative to the dimension of the connecting members and this results in a significant bulk of the connection device.
An object of the invention is to provide a device for connecting the ends of optical fiber cables having a reduced bulk compared to existing devices.
To this end, there is provided according to the invention a connection device comprising a support on which the ends of the cables are fixed and optical fiber connecting members, in which the optical fibers are grouped according to flexible modules coiled in the support from the ends of the cables to the immediate vicinity of the connecting members.
Because of the protection provided by the grouping of fibers according to modules and the flexibility of these modules, it is thus possible to eliminate the cassettes and the holding means usually provided in them, and to reduce very significantly the 'footprint of the support so that the connecting device has overall a reduced size compared to previous devices.
According to an advantageous version of the invention, the support has a bowl shape and has notches facing the connecting members. This facilitates handling during an intervention on the connection device.
According to another advantageous aspect of the invention, the connecting members are carried by stackable trays preferably connected to each other by articulations extending on one side of the tray.
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will appear on reading the following description of a particular non-limiting embodiment of the invention, in relation to the single attached figure which is a perspective view of a connection device according to the invention.
Referring to the figure, the connection device according to the invention comprises a support 1 in the form of a bowl associated with a frame 10 disposed inside the support 1. The support 1 comprises fastening members 2 for the ends 3 of two fiber optic cables. In the illustrated embodiment, the optical fiber cables are of the type described in the document FR
A-2.665.266 that is to say that the optical fibers are grouped according to modules each comprising a flexible retaining sheath ensuring mechanical coupling between the fibers so that each module ensures protection of the individual fibers while retaining a significant flexibility.
According to the invention the optical fibers 4 are maintained in the form of a module 5 from the end of the cables 3 to the immediate vicinity of connecting members 6 carried by stackable trays 7. In the illustrated embodiment, the stackable trays 7 are connected to each other by articulations 8 extending on one side of the plates, and are kept associated with each other by snap-on lugs 9 on a side opposite to the articulations 8. The lower plate 7 is fixed to the chassis 10 .
Opposite the plates 7, the bowl support 1 includes notches 11 facilitating access and handling of the plates 7 and allowing the modules 5 to be released laterally during an intervention on the splices.
Each module 5 is coiled directly in the support 1 once passing under the stacking of the plates 7 then is folded back to return to the connecting members 6 passing in a space 12 between the tubular frame 10 and the support 1. This arrangement allows maximum clearance of the modules 5 for intervention on the connecting members 6 before their installation on the plates 7.
In the figure there is shown a single module for each cable so as not to overload the figure. In reality, a cable is generally divided into several modules which are preferably identified either by the color of the retaining sheath or by an identification ribbon wound around one or more modules.
The device further comprises a housing 13 partially shown in the figure.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the embodiment described and it is possible to make variant embodiments without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the claims.
In particular, although the invention has been illustrated in relation to an embodiment in which the optical fibers 4 are separated from each other immediately upstream of the connecting members 6 so as to produce an individual splice between the end of two optical fibers, it is possible to provide connecting members 6 making it possible to directly connect the ends of two modules according to collective splices.
Although the invention has been illustrated with cables having a structure in accordance with document FR-A2.665.266, it is also possible to make a connection according to the invention from cables comprising load-bearing members such as tubes or a grooved rod. In this case, the optical fibers will be grouped according to modules from the end of the cable prior to their installation in a connection device.
Furthermore, although the invention has been illustrated with modules 5 in which the optical fibers are grouped in a bundle surrounded by a retaining sheath, the modules according to the invention can also be produced in the form of sheets in which the optical fibers are arranged parallel to each other.
Although the invention has been described in connection with the connection of two cable ends, the device according to the invention is suitable for connecting a greater number of ends and can in particular be used as a dividing member.
Although the trays have been illustrated according to an embodiment where they are articulated to each other and snapped on, trays may be provided slightly embedded in each other or simply superimposed.
