Abstract

The cigarette lighter has a tungsten filament (1) traversed by an electric current generated by a 9 volt battery (2) connected in a closed circuit with the tungsten filament when the user operates a switch (3). The "pocket electric lighter, does not use an ignited gas but consists in using calorific energy generated by an electric current to achieve the same end. It is about a lighter entirely - and only - with battery. Its technical characteristics are the subject of I 'exposed below.

A - COMPONENTS OF THE SYSTEM:
1) A generator: The prototype that has been produced works with a 9 Volt battery sold in large areas. Two batteries of the same voltage can be connected in series. Batteries of different voltage may nevertheless be used for the same purpose, in relation to the type of resistance used.

Rechargeable batteries or other generators with similar characteristics can complete the range of products benefiting from this system.

 2) A sensor: Adapted to the characteristics of the system, those that can be found commercially are many and varied.

 3) A resistance: A tungsten filament was preferred during the design of the prototype, because of its intrinsic characteristics (behavior at high temperatures). This type of filament is used in particular for household light bulbs. These are filaments of household bulbs (40 to 100 Watts, 220 - 240 Volts) whose length had been reduced to a few millimeters (from 0.1 to 1 centimeter depending on the section of the filament) which were used for the needs of the experiments. . Worn in red, and in the open air of course (and not in white, as in its normal use, in the ampoule, under vacuum) this filament allows without difficulty "to light a cigarette".

This filament is fixed flat on a heat-resistant insulation, or wrapped around it so that the application of the cigarette does not compromise the solidity of the filament.

 4) A protective grid for the tungsten filament (optionally): The necessary filament having a small section, direct contact with the cigarette could have the effect of weakening or even breaking it in the case of repeated use. This is why a protective grid (in interlaced and heat-resistant wires) can usefully be interposed between the end of the cigarette and the tungsten filament while being flush, but without contact, on the surface of the latter. This component can be omitted and its absence does not prejudice the viability of the system.

B - OPERATION OF THE SYSTEM:
The switch on closes the electrical circuit and the flow of current heats the tungsten filament (JOULE law). The smoker only has to apply the tip of his cigarette to the opening provided for this purpose.
