Abstract

The cylinder head (20) is constructed with a combustion face (18), which forms the boundary of the combustion chamber (16) of the engine. This combustion surface has, at least, two holes (24), which open into the combustion chamber and which are separated by a landing area (32). The openings are formed as housings for the cylindrical housings (40), which are located to receive the valve seats. The landing area has, at least, one groove (34), which is formed in the combustion surface of the cylinder head. The groove is formed in a direction (X-X), which is parallel to the line joining the axes of the openings. The groove is formed with a width which is reduced relative to the depth and is of the order of less than a tenth of the depth.

Description

The invention relates to an internal combustion engine cylinder head.

The invention relates more particularly to an internal combustion engine cylinder head, in particular for a motor vehicle, of the type comprising a fire face which closes an internal combustion chamber of an engine cylinder, of the type comprising at least two orifices which open into the combustion chamber and which are separated by a trigger guard, and of the type in which the trigger guard comprises at least one groove formed in the fire face of the cylinder head, substantially parallel to the direction joining the axes of the orifices.

The trigger guard, which is arranged for example between two valve seats or between a valve seat and the orifice emerging from a combustion prechamber, is arranged in the region of the cylinder head subjected to the highest temperatures.

This trigger guard is also subjected to frequent thermal heating and cooling cycles, not only when the engine is started and stopped, but also during each engine operating cycle.

Indeed, during the intake phase, the trigger guard tends to be cooled by the intake gases which are substantially at room temperature while, during the exhaust phase, the trigger guard is in contact with the burnt gases. which are still at a very high temperature.

As a result, the trigger guard undergoes successive expansions and contractions which, associated with a phenomenon of creep at the highest temperatures, can lead to the appearance of cracks in the surrounding area of the cylinder head which make it a particularly fragile area.

It has already been proposed, in particular in the document
US-A-4,968,733, to provide the trigger guard with two recesses arranged in a transverse direction which have the drawback of increasing the heat exchange surface between the trigger guard and the exhaust gases, which leads to an increase maximum temperatures reached in the trigger guard.

Also, with the aim of reinforcing the temperature resistance of the trigger guard, the invention proposes a cylinder head of the type seen above, characterized in that the groove has a reduced width compared to its depth.

- la rainure s'étend perpendiculairement au plan de la face feu de la culasse;;
According to other features of the invention
- the width of the groove is less than a tenth of its depth
- the groove opens at each of its ends into the orifices
the orifices are cylindrical housings intended to receive added valve seats, and the depth of the groove is less than the depth of the housings of the valve seats
- The groove extends perpendicular to the plane of the fire face of the cylinder head;
- the groove extends in an oblique plane relative to the plane of the fire face of the cylinder head
- the trigger guard is provided with two parallel grooves arranged symmetrically on either side of the axis XX joining the axes of the two through orifices
- The bottom of the groove has a rounded shape.

FIG. 1 schematically shows an internal combustion engine 10 in which a piston 12 moves inside a cylinder 14 whose upper end, delimiting a combustion chamber 16, is closed by the face fire 18 of a cylinder head 20.

A duct 22 is fitted in the cylinder head 20 and it opens into the combustion chamber 16 through an orifice 24 capable of being closed by a valve 26 bearing against a valve seat 28.

FIG. 2 shows a detail of the fire face 18 of the cylinder head 20 which closes the combustion chamber 16 and which is provided with two orifices 24, one of which is intended for the admission of the air-fuel mixture and of which the other is for the exhaust of burnt gases.

The valve seats 28 of each of the two orifices 24 delimit between them a trigger guard 32 in which is formed a groove 34 in accordance with the teachings of the invention.

The groove 34 is arranged in the fire face 18 of the cylinder head 20 along the axis XX which connects the axes of each of the two through holes 24 and it extends over the entire width of the trigger guard 32 to open at each of its ends 36 , 38 in the housings 40 of the valve seats 28.

As can be seen more particularly in FIG. 3, the depth of the groove 34 is significantly greater than its width and is preferably between half and once the axial depth of the valve seats 28.

The groove 34 thus plays the role of expansion joint of the bridge 32 which makes it possible, when the latter expands due to an increase in its temperature, to prevent the appearance of excessive compression stresses in the material of the cylinder head which would be likely to deform it plastically, which would have the consequence of causing the appearance of cracks during the phase of contraction of the trigger guard due to its cooling.

The relationship between the depth of the groove 34 and its width, which appears to be the geometry of a saw cut, means that this groove 34 is very quickly blocked by soot from the combustion of fuel.

The soot being very compact, they do not prevent a free expansion of the trigger guard 32 but by their presence they prevent the increase in the volume of the combustion chamber, they prevent the formation of a poor combustion zone and they avoid d '' increase the heat exchange surface between the gases and the cylinder head 20.

There is shown in Figures 4 and 5 an alternative embodiment of the invention in which the bridge 32 of the cylinder head 20 is provided with two identical grooves 34, parallel and which are arranged symmetrically on either side of the axis XX which joins the axes of the through holes 24.

This arrangement makes it possible to better distribute the possibilities of expansion of the trigger guard 32 at each of its ends.

FIGS. 6 and 7 show in more detail two embodiments of the grooves 34.

In the first embodiment shown in Figure 6, the grooves 34 are cut perpendicular to the fire face 18 of the cylinder head 20 while, in the embodiment shown in Figure 7, the grooves 34 are cut in two oblique symmetrical planes by relative to the plan of the fire face 18.

Oblique cut grooves allow expansion of the bridge 32 in two perpendicular directions and allow the bottom 42 of the grooves 34 to be arranged further from the zones of maximum deformation of the bridge 32.

In all cases, the bottom 42 of the grooves 34 preferably has a shape in rounded section, as can be seen in particular in FIGS. 8 and 9, so as to avoid any zone of concentration of stresses liable to cause the appearance cracks at the bottom of the grooves.

The grooves 34 can for example be produced by cutting by high pressure water jet, by laser machining, by electroerosion or by micro-milling.

The width of the grooves 34 can be very reduced. It may even be sufficient for it to be of the order of 0.1 to 0.5 mm.

The invention is described in the case of a trigger guard separating two added valve seats but it is possible to envisage the implementation of the invention in the case where the material trigger separates an added valve seat from a through orifice any, for example the orifice emerging from a combustion prechamber arranged inside the cylinder head and opening into the combustion chamber.
