Abstract

The cylinder head (20) is constructed with a combustion face (18), which forms the boundary of the combustion chamber (16) of the engine. This combustion surface has at, least, two holes (24), which open into the combustion chamber and which are separated by a landing area (32). The openings are formed as housings for the cylindrical housings (30), which are located to receive the valve seats. A thermal screen (34) is fitted into the landing area, between the valve seat housings. The screen is formed with a central area (36), which is produced in a refractory material and is located directly over the landing area and is so located so as to be flush with the surface of the combustion face of the cylinder head. The thermal screen has two side panels (38), which lock the screen in position between the valve seat housings.

Description

The invention relates to an internal combustion engine cylinder head.

The invention relates more particularly to an internal combustion engine cylinder head, in particular for a motor vehicle, one fire face of which closes a combustion chamber of an engine cylinder and of the type comprising at least two orifices which open into the combustion chamber and which are separated by a trigger guard.

The trigger guard, which is arranged for example between two valve seats or between a valve seat and the orifice emerging from a combustion prechamber, is arranged in the region of the cylinder head subjected to the highest temperatures.

This trigger guard is also subjected to frequent thermal heating and cooling cycles, not only when the engine is started and stopped, but also during each engine operating cycle.

Indeed, during the intake phase, the trigger guard tends to be cooled by the intake gases which are substantially at room temperature while, during the exhaust phase, the trigger guard is in contact with the burnt gases. which are still at a very high temperature.

As a result, the trigger guard undergoes successive expansions and contractions which, associated with a phenomenon of creep at the highest temperatures, can lead to the appearance of cracks in the surrounding area of the cylinder head which make it a particularly fragile area.

In order to reinforce the temperature resistance of the trigger guard, the invention proposes a cylinder head of the type seen above, characterized in that a heat shield is attached to the fire face of the cylinder head, in front of the trigger guard separating the two orifices.

FIG. 1 schematically shows an internal combustion engine 10 in which a piston 12 moves inside a cylinder 14 whose upper end, delimiting a combustion chamber 16, is closed by the face fire 18 of a cylinder head 20.

A duct 22 is fitted in the cylinder head 20 and it opens into the combustion chamber 16 through an orifice 24 capable of being closed by a valve 26 bearing against a valve seat 28.

FIG. 2 shows a detail of the fire face 18 of the cylinder head 20 which closes the combustion chamber 16 and which is provided with two orifices 24, one of which is intended for the admission of the air-fuel mixture and of which the other is for the exhaust of burnt gases.

As can be seen more particularly in FIG. 3, the valve seats 28 of each of the orifices 24 are attached in cylindrical housings arranged in the fire face 18 of the cylinder head 20.

The two valve seats 28 delimit between them a trigger guard 32 which is provided with a heat shield 34 in accordance with the teachings of the invention.

The heat shield 34 has a substantially flat central portion 36 which is arranged in the fire face 18 of the cylinder head 20, in front of the narrowest region of the trigger guard 32.

As can be seen in Figure 3, the heat shield 34 has at each of its edges 37 adjacent to the valve seats 28 of the sides 38 which extend perpendicular to the fire face towards the interior of the cylinder head 20 and which are each clamped radially between a valve seat 28 and its associated housing 30.

In order to limit the clamping force of the sidewalls 38, they are each received in a corresponding recess 40 arranged in a cylindrical side wall 42 of a housing 30 of a valve seat 28.

The clearances 40 can be made either by molding the cylinder head 20, or during the machining of the housings 30 of the valve seats 28.

Likewise, the central portion 36 of the heat shield 34 is received in a recess 44 formed in the bridge 32 so that the heat shield 34 does not form a protuberance in the fire face 18.

The heat shield 34 can be produced by deformation of a sheet of refractory steel sheet or can be obtained by molding and can then be made of sintered material, for example ceramic.

The heat shield 34 which is shown in Figures 2 and 3 is thus easy to install on the cylinder head 20 since it is not necessary to provide specific means for its fixing, this function being provided by the valve seats 28 who are forcibly engaged in leusr housing 30.

The presence of the thermal screen 34 makes it possible, during engine operation, to limit the temperature reached by the trigger guard, but also to limit the variation of this temperature between the different engine operating phases.

The combination of these two factors greatly limits the appearance of cracks in the trigger guard and thus increases the longevity of the cylinder head.

FIGS. 4 and 5 show an alternative embodiment of the invention in which the heat shield 34 is produced in the form of an insert embedded by overmolding in the trigger guard 32.

To this end, the heat shield 34 has two fixing lugs 48 which are arranged at each of the two edges 46 of the central portion 36 whose direction is substantially parallel to the direction X-X which joins the axes of the conduits 22.

Each of the fixing lugs 48 has a first branch 50 which extends perpendicularly from the central portion 36 towards the interior of the cylinder head 20 and is extended at its end by a second branch 52 which extends substantially in the plane general of the cylinder head 20, in a direction substantially perpendicular to the direction XX which joins the axes of the orifices 22.

The branches 50, 52 of the legs 48 are thus embedded in the trigger guard 32 and ensure the fixing of the flush central portion 36 of the heat shield 34.

A particularity of this method of attachment is that it also makes it possible to reduce the compression stresses of the trigger guard 32 due to the expansion of the trigger guard 32 during its heating.

Indeed, the branches 50, 52 of the lugs 48 somehow play the role of expansion joints because, due to a poor metallurgical connection between the material of the insert and the aluminum of the cylinder head, it occurs, upon cooling of the cylinder head, detachment between the fixing lugs 48 and the cylinder head 20 which, on the next heating cycle, allows the aluminum of the cylinder head 20 to expand without causing local plastic deformation of the material in the bridge 32 .

In this embodiment, it is necessary to provide a sufficient original thickness of the central portion 36 of the heat shield 34 so as to form a machining allowance for facing the fire face 18 of the cylinder head 20.

FIG. 6 shows an alternative embodiment of a heat shield 34 produced in the form of an insert in which the central portion 36 of the heat shield 34 is not planar but has the shape of a bowl. .

This embodiment shows that the addition of a heat shield 34 can be carried out even in the case where the fire face 18 of the cylinder head 20 has particular shapes intended to improve the combustion of the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber 16.

The invention has been described here in the case of a trigger guard arranged between two valve seats, but provision can be made to use a heat shield according to the invention to improve the temperature resistance of a trigger guard connecting a valve seat to the orifice emerging from a combustion prechamber.
