Abstract

The exchanger consists of a bundle of flat parallel tubes (12) connected by a collector plate (26) with a row of spaced elongate holes (24) into which ends of the tubes are welded. Each hole is dimensioned to receive a single tube. The tubes are formed of folded sheet metal, such that they have a small depression (44) in their outer wall at the joining point of the two ends of the folded sheet. At least one of the two longer edge surfaces of each hole in the collector plate includes a small projection (48) which corresponds to the depression of the tube wall. The ends of the folded tube sheet may be folded simply against each other to define an internal wall (40), or may alternatively be wrapped round each other (56) to leave the internal tube space clear.

Description

Flat tube heat exchanger
The invention relates to a heat exchanger with flat tubes.

Such heat exchangers are used in particular in motor vehicles with an internal combustion engine to ensure either the cooling of the engine or the heating of the passenger compartment.

We know, especially from the French Patents
Applicants No 91 03411 and No 92 09470, heat exchangers of this type which comprise a bundle of parallel flat tubes and a collecting plate provided with holes in which the ends of the tubes are received and brazed, each hole having an elongated section suitable for receiving two ends of tubes and having two large opposite sides respectively forming two spouts directed towards the inside of the hole to fill the remaining spaces between the collector plate and the two ends of tubes.

To manufacture such a heat exchanger, the ends of the tubes are inserted into the holes in the collector plate, then the assembly is brought to a temperature sufficient to ensure the melting of an alloy which is either supplied in the form of wire or powder, either present as a coating plated on the collector plate and / or on the tubes.

The alloy then comes, under the possible action of a soldering flux or under the action of gravity, filling the remaining spaces between the two ends of the tubes and the edges of the holes in the collector plate and, after cooling to at room temperature, make a sealed connection between the harness and the collector plate.

In such heat exchangers, the holes have a section of elongated shape suitable for each receiving two tubes of substantially oblong shape whose cross sections are joined and arranged in the extension of one another.

The above-mentioned spouts make it possible to fill the spaces formed between the edge of the hole and the walls of the two tubes at their connection, thus preventing any risk of leakage of the brazing alloy.

One of the main drawbacks of the aforementioned heat exchangers is that their bundle is formed of pairs of tubes and that it is necessary, each time, to introduce the tubes of the same pair into a single hole in the collector plate, which complicates assembly.

The object of the invention is in particular to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks.

To this end, it provides a heat exchanger of the type defined in the introduction, in which each hole is suitable for receiving a single end of the tube, in which the tube has a stapled or folded face delimiting at least one depression, and in which only one long sides of the hole form at least one beak directed towards the inside of the hole to fill the space remaining between the collector plate and the depression of the tube.

Thus, the bundle of the heat exchanger is formed from a multiplicity of tubes, each of which is introduced individually into a hole in the collector plate.

Because each tube has a stapled or folded face, it can be produced in the form of a multichannel tube internally delimiting several circulation passages.

Because this stapled or folded face delimits one or more depressions, it is possible to fill the latter with one or more nozzles directed towards the inside of the hole and provided on only one of the long sides of the hole.

Thus, it is no longer necessary to provide a spout on the other long side of the hole, as was necessary in previously known heat exchangers.

In the description which follows, made only by way of example, reference is made to the appended drawings, in which - FIG. 1 is a partial view in cross section of a heat exchanger according to the invention after assembly by brazing of the header plate and bundle of flat tubes; - Figure 2 is a partial view in longitudinal section of the heat exchanger of Figure 1; - Figure 3 is a partial top view, and on an enlarged scale, of the header plate of the heat exchanger of Figures 1 and 2 showing a hole in which is received the end of a folded flat tube; - Figure 4 is a view similar to that of Figure 3 but without the tube; - Figure 5 is a partial plan view of a collector plate, a hole of which receives the end of a stapled flat tube; and - Figure 6 is a view similar to that of Figure 5, but without the tube.

The heat exchanger shown in FIG. 1 comprises a bundle 10 formed by a multiplicity of parallel flat tubes 12 and a multiplicity of corrugated inserts 14. These corrugated inserts are arranged between two adjacent tubes as well as between each of the end tubes and a corresponding side cheek 16 (Figure 2).

Each tube 12 has an elongated section (FIG. 3) delimited by two large opposite flat faces 18 and two small semi-circular faces 20.

The tubes 12 have free ends 22 which are bare and not covered by the spacers 14. Each end 22 is received in a hole 24 of elongated section (Figures 1, 3 and 4) formed through a manifold plate 26, again called a plate with holes, generally rectangular in shape.

The plate 26 has a generally rectangular shape and it is provided, at its periphery, with a folded edge 28 delimiting a peripheral groove 30. This groove is intended to receive a peripheral rim 32 forming part of a wall of a water box 34 , with the interposition of a seal 36. The folded edge 28 has end tabs 38 intended to be folded down to ensure the maintenance of the water box and the compression of the seal 36, this in itself known.

As can be seen in FIG. 3, one of the two large flat faces 18 of the tube 12 extends between the semicircular faces 20, while the other large flat face 18 is formed in two coplanar parts joined together by two folded edges 40 brought against each other and perpendicular to one of the two long sides of the section of the tube. A tube of the folded type is thus produced which internally delimits two channels 42.

Because the folded edges delimit a rounded small diameter, a depression 44 is formed in the form of a longitudinal groove, at the junction of these two folded edges 40.

As can be seen in FIG. 4, the hole 24 has an oblong section adapted to that of the section of the tube 12. I1 comprises two large opposite sides 46 one of which has a spout 48 directed towards the inside of the hole and intended to fill, at least in part, the depression 44 formed at the junction of the two folded edges 40, when the tube 12 is introduced into the hole 24. The other large side 46 is devoid of spout.

The two long sides 46 are joined together by two semi-circular edges 50 of radius slightly greater than the external radius of the small faces 20 of the tubes.

The hole 24 has a length slightly greater than the transverse length of a flat tube, as defined between its two small semi-circular faces 20.

Thus, each hole 24 can receive the end 22 of a tube 12 for a subsequent brazing operation. This brazing operation provides a brazing joint 52 (FIG. 1) at the junction of the edge of the hole 24 and the wall of the tube received in the hole.

As can also be seen in FIG. 1, each hole 24 is surrounded by a raised edge 54 which extends in a direction generally perpendicular to the plane of the plate and therefore generally parallel to the axes of the tubes.

When the respective ends 22 of the tubes 12 are introduced into the holes 24 of the collecting plate, the spouts 48 each time fill the depression formed at the junction of the folded edges 40 of each tube.

If these nozzles were not present, it would be practically impossible to fill the space thus delimited, by the solder joint 52 alone.

In the case of FIG. 5, each hole 24 receives a single tube 12 of the stapled type which has two end edges 56 wound one on the other like a staple. The two rolled edges 56 form, at their connection, a depression 58 having the shape of a longitudinal groove.

There is also a single spout 48 on that of the two long sides of the hole which faces the rolled edges 56.

Dans l'exemple, le bec 48 n'est pas exactement au milieu de ce grand côté pour combler au moins en partie la dépression 58.In the example, the spout 48 is not exactly in the middle of this large side to at least partially fill the depression 58.

The spouts formed at the holes of the collector plate can be obtained by simply cutting the collector plate, prior to its assembly with the bundle of tubes.

As a variant, it is possible to form the spouts by localized deformation of the raised edge 54, and this after introduction of the tube ends into the corresponding holes of the collector plate.

The invention is not limited to the embodiments described above by way of example and extends to other variants.

Thus, it is possible to use tubes, one of the large faces of which has several depressions each formed by two folded or stapled edges. In such a case, one of the two long sides of the hole must have several spouts suitable for filling the abovementioned depressions, while the other long side of the hole will always have no spout.

The invention is particularly applicable to heat exchangers of motor vehicles.
