Abstract
Description
The device presented for invention relates to the essential filtration of water that must be carried out in aquariums. Among the techniques used, a method makes it possible to use, as a filtering element, the gravel placed on the bottom of the aquarium.
In this method, it is therefore necessary to force the water to pass through the gravel and for this it must be in the water circuit.
The direction of crossing the gravel can be from bottom to top or in the opposite direction, that is to say, from top to bottom. The gravel filtration device presented for the invention operates in the latter direction (top to bottom). Known devices working in this direction work, in general, by the call of water that creates from the bottom of the aquarium an ascending system of air-lift type. It may be recalled that in this ascending system, the water is entrained by a strong current (1 FIG. 1) of air bubbles, created by a diffuser (2 FIG. 1) receiving the air (3 FIG. 1) of a pump. This diffuser is placed in the low position in a chimney (4 FIG. 1) crossing the gravel (5 FIG. 1) and resting on the bottom of the aquarium. A strainer or a device having the same role allows the water which has passed through the gravel from top to bottom to enter the chimney and be carried by the bubbles to be discharged into the aquarium.
It is obvious that, in such a device, the chances for the aquarium water to cross are uneven. The water located in the aquarium, far from the chimney, is much less likely to reach it, because of significant pressure losses than that located closer to the chimney where the pressure losses are less strong. The lack of homogenization in the filtration of water by this system, has led to the use for some time of a device which reduces pressure losses, by creating a space between the gravel and the bottom, space where water can circulate, without pressure loss, towards the chimney. Such a device is represented by a horizontal partition (1 FIG. 2), pierced with orifices or slots, placed under the gravel (2 FIG. 2) and separated from the bottom by a space (3 FIG. 2). water filtered by the gravel passes through the space through the orifices or slots. Such a system reduces the pressure drops, but these still remain significant since the surfaces of the partition which surround the slots or the openings are not permeable to water. These surfaces are clearly larger (often 3 or 4 times more) than those of the slots or orifices. I1 therefore still remains in this system still significant pressure drops.
In addition, such partitions are often called gravel filters. This qualification is both abusive and improper because the slots and the orifices are macroscopic and in no case have filtering power. They would only stop very large debris if they had the chance that in fact they never have, because gravel stops them before them.
Compared to existing devices, the gravel filtration device, presented for the invention, marks a very significant improvement because it is really filtering and it causes the pressure drops to be very low and equal at all points of the gravel.
The aquarium water gravel filtration device presented for invention consists of an element that has been used for a long time: the air-lift chimney associated with two original elements represented by a box spring (1 FIG. 3 ) and by the canvas (2 FIG. 3) which surrounds this box spring.
The bed base is made of a tangle (1 FIG. 4) of wires (about i mm) made of rot-proof and non-biodegradable plastic. The mechanical qualities of these wires are such that they give the infrastructure great strength while allowing very large free spaces (2 FIG. 4) between these wires for the circulation of filtered water. by the canvas.
This base receives the base of the chimney with a lateral opening for the penetration of water from the base.
The fabric (3 FIG. 4) with a thickness of the order of a millimeter consists of plastic threads (for example, polyacrilamide) of very small diameters and which are not woven.
This non-woven fabric is reminiscent of felt, which it does not have the disadvantages because it does not fluff. It stops the microparticles which escape the filtration of the gravel.
In addition, it allows bacteria that purify water (for example, denitrification bacteria) to colonize them, without however obstructing it.
The canvas bed base has an area equal to that of the bottom of the aquarium against which it is applied.
The installation of the gravel filtration device presented for the invention is very simple. It is enough to equip the box spring (1 FIG. 5), placed at the bottom of the aquarium, with the ascending chimney (2 FIG. 5), so that the base of this chimney penetrates into the thickness of the bed base by the orifice with which it is provided. A base (3 FIG. 5) ensures sealing between the chimney and the canvas.
The bed base is then covered with gravel (4 FIG. 5) the height of the layer is left to the convenience of the user.
The chimney, the upper end of which must be located just above the level of the aquarium, is fitted with an air diffuser (5 FIG. 5) connected to an air pump located outside the aquarium.
The operation illustrated in Figure 5 can be summarized as follows. The current of air bubbles coming from the diffuser entrains in its ascent water which is discharged into the aquarium.
Cela crée un appel d'eau depuis le sommier et uniquement depuis cet endroit (étanchéité entre la toile et la cheminée assurée).This creates a call for water from the box spring and only from this place (tightness between the fabric and the chimney guaranteed).
This stream of water which is created in the box spring in turn calls the aquarium water which it forces to pass successively through the gravel and through the canvas, thus subjecting it to a double filtration (that of the gravel and that of the canvas).
The fact that the water circulates without pressure losses in the bed base, has the consequence of giving at any point of the gravel surface (remote regions or regions close to the chimney) to the water, equal chances to be filtered provided that the gravel layer has the same thickness over the entire surface of the bed base. We can not voluntarily respect this condition when we want to promote filtration in a part of the aquarium. For this, it suffices to give a smaller thickness of gravel in this place; pressure drops are thus reduced at this location and water access to the fabric is therefore facilitated.
The filtration device presented for the invention therefore gives the user freedom, by a play of relief which he can easily create with the gravel, to favor certain places in the aquarium, those which for example are usually deemed to be the seat dead water. He can, according to his whim or imperative needs, quickly modify the relief of the gravel to selectively intervene on the filtration speed. It is also possible by creating, for example valleys, to give birth and to orient water currents at the surface of the gravel.
The filtration power of the fabric, significantly greater than that of a thick layer of gravel, also makes it possible to reduce the thickness of this gravel, without adversely affecting the quality of the filtration.
It is obvious that the decrease in the thickness of the gravel gives a larger volume to the aquarium water, available for the fish.
The infrastructure of the bed base has a resistance such that it can withstand without deformation the heaviest objects which one may have to place in the aquarium for purposes, for example, of decoration.
