Abstract

The stop valve is held in the closed position, against the wt. of liq. in the header tank, entirely by having a lower pressure in the header tank than in the vessel. The stop valve is pref. an elastic, e.g. rubber, diaphragm of which the upper surface closes against a seat above it. The diaphragm is pref. suspended from a grill fixed in the passage above the diaphragm. Pref. the diaphragm adopts the closed position automatically when pressure is the same in both the vessel and the header tank. The header tank is pref. connected to a vacuum pump. The stop valve holds must in the header tank until the time comes for it to be released to percolate through marc on top of must the vessel. The stop valve is opened and closed by differential pressure in the vessel and header tank. This is much simpler and less costly than providing the valve with an externally operable, actuating linkage.

Description

The present invention relates to tanks, with an upper tank communicating with the tank by a passage closed by a shutter.

This is the type of wine-making tanks with pumping over of the must. The inaccessible shutter from the outside is controlled by a complicated and expensive mechanism.

The invention overcomes these drawbacks by a shutter as it is held in the closed position, against the weight of the liquid contained in the tank, by the depression prevailing in the tank relative to the tank.

The shutter is controlled automatically under the effect of means for placing the cuvette in depression with respect to the tank which can be used to lift part of the liquid from the bottom of the tank into the cuvette.

According to a preferred embodiment, because of great simplicity of assembly and manufacture, the obturator is an elastic membrane whose upper face normally applies to a seat above it. Preferably, the membrane is fixed to the center of a grid mounted above it in the passage.

To facilitate the depression of the cuvette relative to the tank, it is good that the shutter is put on itself, for example by natural elastic return of the rubber of the membrane, in the closed position when the same pressure prevails in the tank and in the cellar.

In the accompanying drawings, given only by way of example
Figures 1 to 3 are partial sectional views of a winemaking plant in three operating positions
Figure 4 is a sectional view of the passage between the tank and the tank and the shutter, the latter being shown in the closed position in solid lines and in the open position in broken lines; and
Figure 5 is a plan view of the shutter.

The installation includes a tank 1 and an upper tank 2. The tank 2 communicates with the tank 1 through a passage 3, which can be closed by a shutter 4 consisting of a rubber membrane fixed to the center of a grid 6 mounted in the passage 3. The upper face of the membrane 5 applies on a seat 7 located above it formed by the frustoconical wall, with a large base directed downwards1 through the passage.

The bottom of the tank 1 communicates, with the interposition of a strainer, with the tank 2 by a conduit 8, provided with a non-return valve 9 preventing any downward circulation.

An inlet 10, formed at the top of the tank 2, forms the seat of a shutter 11 integral with a membrane 12, mounted outside the tank 2 by a mesh 13 and closing the outlet of a conduit 14 leading to a vacuum pump 15.

A valve 16 allows the conduit 14 to be put into the atmosphere. A bypass 17, with the non-return valve 18 preventing any circulation of the pump 15 towards the tank 2, puts the latter two in communication.

In FIG. 1, the installation is at rest. There is no wort in the vat 2. The valves 9 and 18 are closed.

The shutter 4 is closed due to the elasticity of the membrane 5 which naturally tends to be pressed against the seat 7.

The pump 15 is put into operation. The valve 16 is closed. A vacuum is created in the duct 14. The mEmbrane 12 stalls. It drives the shutter 11 upwards, which closes the inlet 10, and then raises, due to the differences in surface area between the membrane 12 and the valve 18, the valve 18, which creates a depression in the tank 2 The valve 9 opens. Wort is drawn into the vat 2 through line 8 (Figure 2).

The operation of the pump 15 is stopped. The vacuum is maintained in the vat 2. This vacuum keeps the shutter 4 closed despite the weight of the must contained in the vat 2.

The valve 16 is opened. The vacuum ceases in the duct 14. The valve 18 closes. The membrane 12 descends. The shutter 11 moves away from the inlet 10, which puts the cuvette 2 in communication with the atmosphere. The valve 9 closes. The shutter 4 opens (Figure 3). The must contained in cellar 2 sprinkles the marc cap.
