Abstract

Process for the production of rose plants of the type which employs containers of generally cylindrical shape in which a slip planted in peat undergoes a graft and, after a certain period, the plant which has developed is collected with a view to marketing it, characterised in that the entirety of the said operations is carried out after the containers have been buried over at least about a lower third of their height.

Description

The present invention relates to a process for the production of rose plants, marketable in all seasons and presented in a form allowing their transport without risk of deterioration.

The principle of such a process was created and used by the
Depositor for fifteen years. It is based on the use of a device described for the first time in French patent 69 26406 and consisting of a generally cylindrical capacity open at its upper part and on the side, and the walls of which have a helical groove.

Instead of proceeding, according to the traditional chronology, by cutting in open ground around October, and grafting around April-June of the following year, to finally uproot the plants in December, to deliver them or store them in a cold store, with all the risks of disease and deterioration entailed by these manipulations, this process, in principle, consists of cutting in a capacity of the type mentioned above, filled with peat containing the usual mineral components, then grafting the following month and finally to deliver the plants in their capacity, serving as packaging for their handling and transport.

Raising the plants in an environment free from diseases and parasites ensures their health, and the absence of transplantation prevents any stoppage of the vegetative system.

The present invention, however, represents considerable progress over this technique, despite all the advantages of the latter.

It is based on the observation that keeping the roots of the plants protected from any aeration allows both to speed up the previous process and to obtain plants of much better quality.

The method according to the invention therefore consists, in a cutting / grafting process with a view to the production of rose plants calling upon the use of generally cylindrical capacities of the genus mentioned above, in burying said capacities. over at least about the lower third of their height, to introduce the cutting into the peat contained in said capacity over about half of its height, to proceed to the grafting of the cutting on site, that is to say -to say by keeping the capacity buried and to extract the capacity from its burial only at the time of its delivery.

According to a subsidiary characteristic of the invention, the burial of the capacities is preferably carried out at an inclination of 10 to 20 relative to the vertical.

The advantages resulting from this technique are multiple
The first is of an economic nature: the chronology of the process is considerably accelerated, reducing the time to produce a plant from 14 months to 2 months from the date of cutting. As a corollary, this short delay allows plants to be obtained practically at any time of the year.

A second is of a technical nature: we note that the resumption of roses from the plants thus obtained is 100%, this result is a secondary consequence of the previous speed. In fact, the plants are delivered very young (2 months instead of 14) and therefore still only contain rootlets, which are all active roots, since they are alive. Similarly, the number of "greedy" favorable to the development of the rose is not limited, unlike older plants obtained with the prior art.

The overall explanation for all of these advantageous results lies in the absence of aeration of the roots. In the usual applications, using the same capacities, these capacities, containing the cuttings in peat, were kept simply on the ground, and handled in the open air, in particular to be brought to the grafting personnel. On the contrary, according to the present process, the developing roots are never aerated, the grafting itself being carried out on the spot. This lack of ventilation is complemented by better humidification, for the same reason, water tends to rise in capacity
It will be noted that the inclined installation of the capacities aims in particular to facilitate grafting operations on site, by exposing the face of the cutting to said operations.
