Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to new compositions for the control of parasites, in particular insects, as well as their mode of use. These compositions more particularly contain pheromones and pheromone inhibitors, specific to the parasites whose development is to be controlled.
The ecological problems inherent in the increased use of pesticides are well known. Soil and water contamination is widespread. Toxic residues that stay for longer or shorter periods of time contaminate crops, fruits and livestock, thereby endangering human health.
As the toxicity of the various pesticides becomes better known, the regulations concerning their use become more stringent, and certain products are completely prohibited. As the use of substances allowing against parasites is essential for the protection of crops, different ways have been tried in order to improve the efficiency of this use, thus reducing the quantities applied, which also results in a reduction of the repercussion. The processes used are mainly based on improved application techniques, such as compositions of superior quality, using different surfactants, wetting agents, sticky agents and the like, or combinations in different forms with polymeric substances and the like, in order to increase the effective duration of the pesticide's activity on site.
Thus, for example, pesticides have been applied in the form of microcapsules, films, strips, hollow fibers, and the like. In all cases, the principle is that a matrix, containing the active ingredient, is distributed in a dense manner, and as uniformly as possible, on the crop to be protected. Other processes, to reduce the quantities of pesticides used , consist in replacing them, at least partially, by biological control methods. One of these uses sex baits, pheromones, as well as pheromone inhibitors. The theory behind the use of these substances is that by disrupting the reproductive process, the population of parasites can be significantly reduced.
Pheromones have been used until now in traps, in order to control, in a very limited way, the population, the reason being that these substances which are very effective at very low concentrations, but also very unstable under the conditions normal climatic conditions, degrade rapidly upon exposure.
There are no effective means for the large-scale application of pheromones in the fields. This is probably due to the fact that, in all the above-mentioned methods, microcapsules, strips, etc., only little substance is used per unit area. Extensive coverage results in extensive exposure to the environment of pheromones, which are then quickly lost by evaporation, degradation by UV action, and hydrolysis.
There are a number of patents on the li
slow beratio of pheromones, most of them relating to microencapsulation, or to mixtures, in order to delay the release and to obtain combined effects, for example by incorporating insecticides into the composition. US Patent No. 3,952,093 (Roelof and Paste indicates that pheromone compositions can be encapsulated and used in spray form. Mc Kibben, in US Patent No. 3,954,968, describes the use of a synthetic pheromone mixed with polyethylene glycol, or their derivatives. The composition can be in the form of tablets or capsules. In US Pat. Nos. 3,845,108 and 3,852,419, Roelof et al. describe the dispersion of pheromones in various diluents, including inert viscous liquids, in order to to reduce their rate of volatilization. Chromacek in US Pat. No. 3,966,902 refers to various slow release polymeric compositions. This patent relates only to insecticides encapsulated in the polymer and composed as sprays. Albrect et al., in the patent US No. 04107318, describe stable fungicidal dispersions containing mineral oils and dispersing agents.
A system for the controlled delivery of pheromones has been described by Yydonieous et al. in 7'Contro1- led Release Polymeric Formulations ", p.285, American Chemical Society Symposium, series 33, (1976). It was named" Hercon Tape "and consists of a three-layer plastic laminate, in which the pheromone reservoir is located in the inner layer In the same publication, Ashare and co. describe, page 273, the use of hollow fibers for the distribution of pheromones.
None of the methods described above is satisfactory from a practical point of view. Sprayed pheromone compositions have a very short active life in the field. Strips and hollow fibers are difficult to apply. Microencapsulation is a relatively expensive process which requires special techniques.
The present invention is based on the observation that, as with many pesticides, the activity of pheromones is due to the evaporation of the active substance and to its contact with the target parasites by means of air currents, and that to be interesting, from the point of view of protection of large areas of culture, a pheromone composition must fulfill in particular the following conditions a) its application must be able to be carried out by means of equipment normally used in agriculture, such as airplanes, tractors , and the like, b) once applied, this composition must have a lasting effect on the ground (not less than two weeks).
The new parasiticidal composition according to the invention, in which the active substance, preferably pheromone or pheromone inhibitor, is contained in a polymer matrix capable of gradually and controlled release of said active substance, is characterized in that it protects the latter on the ground against degradation and alteration, in particular by UV and oxidation, and in that it advantageously has adhesive properties which allow it to be fixed on supports.
These new compositions can be applied in the form of various systems, such as solutions, aerosols and the like, the result being the formation of a plurality of "plates", each of which comprises the active substance in the polymer matrix, which may further contain certain adjuvants as UV protection agents, antioxidant agents, adhesive agents, etc., each of these plates containing (after possible evaporation of the solvent) a minimum quantity of active substance.
It has been found that this minimum amount is generally not less than about 2 mg per plate, and is preferably between 5 and 20 mg per plate.
These plates are distributed over large areas according to a plan determined in advance, and cause a breakdown in the communication between the insects and consequently in their reproductive process, which results in a clear reduction in their population. Tests have shown that the application of pheromones, or pheromone inhibitors, in the field, gives satisfactory results when their total quantity per 1000 m2 oscillates between 2 and 20 g, the preferred interval being 3 to 10 g / 1000 m2. The active substance is applied in a number of separate plates, each advantageously containing approximately 5 to 20 mg of active substance, the concentration of the active ingredient in the polymer matrix being of the order of 2 to 20 by weight. carried out in such a way that there is no clear degradation over an extended period of time, and that after approximately 2 weeks, there remains in the matrix approximately 25% of active substance.
The degradation rate can be significantly reduced by concentrating larger quantities of pheromone in a plate. The formate of (Z) -tetradecene-9 ol-1 (FTO), in pheromone hibitor of Heliotis, is put in composition with a copolymer, and it is applied in the form of distinct plates on squares of filter paper ( 10x10 cm) at a rate of 2 and Ç mg respectively per plate. We expose to the sun, to the wind t to dew, and we determine the FTO residue i. re.
The results are as follows:
Residual percentage of the initial quantity
after 1 day 4 days
2 mg plate 43 8.5
5 mg plate 87 62
Different copolymers can be envisaged for the protection of pheromones, or pheromone inhibitors, for long periods of time, against bad weather, allowing a slow diffusion of the active substances through the polymer matrix, and thus a prolonged effectiveness in the field. , which results in a continuous disruption of the reproductive process, and as a result a reduction in the insect population.
Since the population control effect is due to the evaporation of the active ingredient, there is in fact no need to spread the finely divided composition over a large area. It has been found in reality that a much better result is obtained when the composition and its mode of application are such, that the active plates are concentrated at relatively large distances from each other.
The baits for insects (pheromones) and the pheromone inhibitors (breaking agents), which can be used in the compositions according to the invention, belong to different chemical types. In general, these are long chain hydrocarbons, having one or more double bonds in different steric configurations. The chain ends with a hydroxyl group or an ester group. Other types of these compounds have an aldehyde end group. Some of these pheromones and their inhibitors are listed below.

lyse et la dégradation provaquée par les UV;
chaud
d) ils ne sont pas phytotoxiques
e) ils résistent à l'eau. The polymers which can be used for this type of application advantageously meet the following conditions:
a) they provide good protection against hydro
lysis and degradation caused by UV;
b) they allow the diffusion of the active product to the vi
desired size
c) they are not toxic to blood animals
hot
d) they are not phytotoxic
e) they are water resistant.
The monomers, which can be used for the manufacture of these polymers, are available commercially. Particularly suitable are esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid, vinyl acetate, vinyl pyrrolidone, styrene, and the like.
The application method consists in depositing the active composition in the form of separate plates having a relatively high content of pheromone or pheromone inhibitor. The diluent may partially serve as a propellant used for dispersing the substance.
The preferred method consists in preparing the copolymers in solution, using an appropriate volatile organic solvent, the preferred monomers being vinyl pyrrolidone, methyl methacrylate, and a higher alkyl methacrylate such as lauryl methacrylate. Each of these monomers fulfills a specific function. Vinyl pyrrolidone constitutes the hydrophilic part of the polymer, improves adhesion etc. acts as a plasticizer (by absorption of water) to facilitate the formation of film on the sheets. Methyl methacrylate resists UV and weathering well. Lauryl methacrylate is a highly hydrophobic substance, which also improves the film-forming qualities of the composition.
The properties of the copolymer can be adapted to the particular conditions of use, by modifying the proportions of comonomers, as is known to those skilled in the art.
The preferred mode of application consists in preparing a concentrated solution containing the polymer, pheromone or pheromone inhibitor, and the additives, and in spraying this solution in the form of large globules or plates, using appropriate means. Pressurized gases, low boiling liquids and other propellants can be used
The preferred monomers and their optimum proportions are: methyl methacrylate, 30 to 60%, lauryl methacry late, 15 to 30%, vinyl pyrrolidone, 15 to 30%. At best, these proportions are between 50 and 60% for methyl methacrylate, 15 and 20% for lauryl methacrylate, and 20 and 25% for vinylpyrrolidone.
The monomers can be used in different combinations and proportions, in order to obtain the required solubilization, diffusion and adhesion characteristics. The polymerization can be carried out according to methods well known to those skilled in the art, such as solution, suspension, emulsion or bulk polymerization.
As polymerization catalysts can be used peroxides, diazo compounds, and similar substances well known to those skilled in the art. Various additives such as antioxidants, UV absorbers, adhesives, etc., can also be incorporated into the compositions.
The solvent used must be at a low boiling point, not be reactive with respect to the active substance, and it can be chosen in particular from the following types of solvent: hydrocarbons such as lower alkanes, petroleum ethers, and the like , benzene, chlorinated hydrocarbons such as dichloromethane, dichloroethane, chloroform, etc. ; ketones such as acetone, methyl ethyl ketone; alcohols.
The preferred solvents are chlorinated alkanes with a low boiling point.
As propellants, halogenated hydrocarbons, low-boiling hydrocarbons (propane, butane), carbon dioxide, nitrogen or compressed air can be used.

It has a glass transition temperature (calculated Tg) of 390C.
). Samples of the above composition are applied to strips of filter paper, in plates of 3 to 5 mg of active substance: they have good stability to evaporation: after 26 days at room temperature, 48.7% of the inhibitor originally present, is still present.
EXEMPLE 2

The resulting solution is dried. 10 g of the polymer obtained are dissolved in 20 g of dichloroethane: 538 mg of tetradecenol formate, 215 mg of butylated hydroxyanisole and 21 g of cyanosorb (UV absorbent) are added thereto. A sample of this composition After exposure to the weather for 96 hours, retains 71% of its initial content of active product.
EXEMPLE 3
On utilise le copolymère de l'exemple 2.EXAMPLE 3
The copolymer of Example 2 is used.
Après 60 heures d'exposition aux intempéries, il reste encore 43% de la teneur d'origine en constituant actif.240 g of this polymer are dissolved in 480 g of dichloromethane, and 50 g of tetradecenol formate are added to this solution. 100 g of this mixture are introduced into a can of aerosol, closed with a spray valve, and pressurized for 6 atmospheres with carbon dioxide. Plates of this composition are applied by spraying onto strips of filter paper. After 60 hours of exposure to the weather, 43% of the original content of active ingredient remains.
When applied to a cotton field, this composition results in communication breakdown between insects for more than 17 days, as described below.
A field trial is carried out in a cotton field infested with Heliotis, and irrigated by sprinkling, on a 10-day cycle.
The composition is applied to plants at the rate of 5 g of active constituent per 1000 m2. Around the treated field are placed traps lined with synthetic Heliotis pheromone. Communication breakdown is indicated by the relationship between the number of insects trapped in the treated area and the number of insects trapped in the untreated area. We note that on the 16th day after the treatment, there is still 96% of communication breakdown in the treated surface.
Pour heliotis virescens, les données comparatives sont respectivement de 70 et de 100%.In the course of another test on a cotton field (approximately 0.8 ha, infested with Heliotis zea and Heliotis virescens, the above composition is applied at the rate of 160 point sources approximately for 0.4 ha. reduction in trapping and reproduction. Thus, for Heliotis zea, 16 days after application, there is still a 97% reduction in the number of trapped insects (compared to the untreated field), and a reduction in 100% of reproduction For heliotis virescens, the comparative data are 70 and 100% respectively.

Various other pheromones and pheromone inhibitors work well. The "plates", of active substance in the polymer matrix (which require adjuvants or additives), are applied at a rate of approximately 3 to 20 g / 1000 m 2 in the open field (by distribution of sheets of paper or other supports with these "plates", or by applying these "plates" on natural supports in the field). Communication between insects is broken for periods exceeding 2 weeks when plates containing approximately 5 mg of active substance are used each.
During an experiment, approximately 30 plates per 1000 m2 were used with good results. The active substance generally represents 2 to 20% by weight of the matrix.
