Abstract

Ball valve with an oblique channel comprising an inlet duct 1, an outlet duct 2 and an oblique channel 3 interposed between the said ducts in which a ball 5 can move under the effect of the pressure of a liquid from a position, in which it rests on its seat 4 closing the inlet duct 1, to a retracted position in the oblique channel 3. This valve comprises, on either side of the opening of the outlet duct 2, two oblique ribs 8 in a direction parallel to that of the oblique channel 3, the said ribs projecting in the direction of the seat 4 of the ball 5.

Description

The invention relates to ball valves, such as those which are used as a non-return foot valve in installations for lifting charged water.

The advantage of these valves is that the ball rotating on itself prevents the catching or winding of waste or solid products carried by the water and consequently avoids the risks of obstruction.

The invention relates more particularly to ball valves with an oblique channel, in which the ball, under the pressure of the liquid, is directed towards a lateral housing opening into the liquid passage pipe.

It should normally disappear completely to clear the entire passage. It falls back on its seat when the flow stops.

It has been found that in reality the ball does not fully retract into its lateral housing, but remains in an intermediate position substantially at the level of the ellipse of the connection between the lateral housing and the pipe. Indeed, as soon as the ball is lifted from its seat by the fluid, the latter tends to pass all around the ball in the direction of the opposite orifice of the pipe. This passage "in meniscus" exerts on the ball a play of forces in opposite directions, which, joined to the gravity of the ball, prevents it from going to the bottom of the lateral housing. The liquid can then only pass through the peripheral passages of reduced section and the valve can be blocked by relatively small solid bodies entrained by the liquid.

For this reason, ball valves with oblique channel are generally used until now only in installations of lifting of little loaded water, such as sandy waters and are moreover protected by a strainer.

The invention aims to solve this drawback by providing a ball valve with an oblique channel in which the ball effectively retracts into its channel.

To this end, the invention provides for having on either side of the outlet orifice of the valve, at the mouth of the oblique channel, two oblique ribs in a direction parallel to that of said channel, said grooves forming protruding towards the seat of the valve and being interrupted at the entrance to the oblique channel, so as to form stops to block the ball in the completely erased position in the oblique channel during the passage of the liquid, the ball falling back on its seat when the flow is interrupted.

The ne-rvures are of such a dimension that the ball comes almost instantly into contact with them when it is lifted from its seat. They form rails which force the ball towards the bottom of the oblique channel, the end of said rails ensuring the blocking of the ball in the bottom of said channel, as long as the pressure of the liquid is sufficient to overcome the gravity of the ball.

The following description of an embodiment of a ball valve according to the invention will be made with reference to the attached drawing, in which
Figure 1 is a schematic sectional view of a known oblique channel ball valve.

Figure 2 is a schematic sectional view of an oblique channel ball valve according to the invention.

The valve represented in FIG. 1 comprises an inlet channel r for the liquid, an outlet channel 2 arranged in alignment with the inlet channel 1 and an oblique channel 3d opening out between the two channels 1 and 2 and inclined upwards. about 600 with respect to the longitudinal axis a of the two channels 1 and 2.

The inlet channel 1 has at its mouth a shoulder 4, forming a seat for the ball 5. It is removable relative to the assembly formed by the outlet channel 2 and the oblique channel 3. A seal 6 is interposed between the seat 4 and the base of the oblique channel 3.

The oblique channel 3 is closed by a cover 7, which also functions as an inspection hatch.

In FIG. 1, the ball 5 is represented in the zone in which it tends to maintain itself by oscillating slightly and by turning on itself under the effect of the forces exerted on it by the liquid.

The arrows f, f 'show the path of the liquid on either side of the ball.

The valve shown in Figure 2 consists for the most part of the same way as that of Figure 1. The same references indicate the same parts.
A indicates the direction of the liquid.

Two ribs 8 have been placed on either side of the mouth of the outlet channel 2 in the oblique channel 3. These two ribs 8 project towards the seat 4 and thus reduce the free space for the ball in vertical direction, so that when the ball 5 is lifted from its seat, it comes almost instantaneously into contact with the ribs 8, leaving between its lower edge and the lower edge of the oblique channel 3 only an insufficient passage for the liquid who borrows it can exert on the ball 5 a force capable of defeating the main force which pushes it towards the bottom of the channel, assisted by the guidance provided by the ribs 8.

As seen in Figure 2, the ribs 8 are interrupted substantially at the point of junction between the mouth of the outlet channel 2 and the oblique channel 3. Their ends form stops 9 which keep the ball 5 blocked at the bottom of the channel oblique 3 during the passage of the liquid.

The opening of the outlet channel 2 is thus completely unobstructed and the ball valve can be reused in installations for very loaded water causing large size waste.

In FIG. 2, the ball 5 is shown in dotted lines on its seat 4 and in solid lines in abutment against the ends 9 of the ribs 8.
