Abstract

A trough for cultivation of snails is formed with inclined sidewall and base panels to facilitate regular rinsing towards an integral longitudinal drain. Pref. the trough is thermoformed from low density polyethylene sheet, typically about 5 mm thic, complete with an integral vertical rim with a horizontal lip. A one-piece trough may be about 2 m long, 1 m wide, 0.2 m deep. Suitable for use at 20+- 3 deg.C and 85-100% humidity, to maintain snail rearing free from hibernitic constraints or risk of disease or contamination which might inhibit sale for food. Support blocks may be located in recesses beneath the base of the trough. A strip heating element, described in a complementary patent (Fr. App. 80.05069 of 6 March 1980), may be mounted around the inner face of the rim of the trough.

Description

The present invention relates to a tank intended, in particular but not exclusively, for the breeding of snails.

We know that the increase in consumption and the scarcity of certain species of snails due in particular to chemicals used in agriculture and to the action of predators, has led some countries to regulate the collection and export of snails to consumer countries. As a result, it is now necessary to move in this area from a picking economy to a breeding economy.

The object of the present invention is to provide a practical solution to the numerous problems posed by the breeding of snails and in particular to allow continuous breeding independent of the wintering or summering periods by modifying the biological cycle of the different species.

Indeed, the wintering periods are few
G conducive to reproduction. It is therefore necessary, for the sake of rationalization of breeding, to artificially modify the physical parameters of the ambient environment which intervenes in biological rhythms.

More precisely, it is essential to intervene on the one hand on the hygrometric degree of the breeding environment, and on the other hand on the temperature and on the lighting. We know that snails have maximum activity during the night.

Different types of rearing batteries have been proposed but the known parks do not allow optimal reproduction.

According to the present invention, a tank for breeding snails is characterized in that its internal wall has a series of inclined planes in the direction of a discharge conduit, so as to present a large surface for exchange with the ambient. We know that snails, especially before they are adults, are very vulnerable to parasites and that it is important, in order to avoid their multiplication, to carry out regular and rapid cleaning of excrement.

The shape of the container according to the invention allows not only a good exchange with the surrounding environment but also a rapid cleaning which does not require, as in the prior art, the extraction of awkward grids to handle.

- la fig. 6 une coupe selon la ligne VI-VI de la même figure 2 ;
Other characteristics and advantages of the invention will appear during the description which follows of a particular embodiment, given solely by way of nonlimiting example, with reference to the figures which represent
- fig. 1 a perspective view of a container according to the invention
- fig. 2 a view from above of the same bin
- figs. 3, 4 and 5 of the sections along lines III-III, IV-IV. And VV of figure 2
- fig. 6 a section along line VI-VI of the same Figure 2;
- fig. 7 a view of a set of bonding plates
- and fig. 8 a partial section of a tray showing the arrangement of two sets of bonding plates.

In FIG. 1, it can be seen that the tank generally has the shape of a trough comprising a bottom 1 from which project inclined walls 2, 3, 4 and 5 which are connected to a vertical periphery 6 opening out in a horizontal edge 7.

The bottom 1 of the tank has a series of four cells 8 whose lower surfaces constitute planes 9. The bottom 1 itself consists of two inclined plates 1a and 1b, a chute 10 being formed between the planes 1a and 1b, said chute preferably being covered with a grid 11.

The actual bin is for example made of low-voltage polyethylene thermoformed in 5mm thickness and is preferably in one piece. By way of example only, tanks have been made whose length is 2m, width 1.03m and depth 0.2m.

The inclined shape of the walls of the tank allows on the one hand a large spray of water causing droppings and on the other hand to maintain inside the tank a precise humidity which must vary between 100% at night and 85% during the day, temperature being regulated around 200 with an excursion of more or less 30C.

Preferably and in order to avoid the escape of young subjects, an electric fence is placed against the vertical peripheral wall 6, this electric fence preferably being of the type described in patent application No. 80 05069 of March 6, 1980. for "Electric conductor" in the name of the Applicant.

The food is placed on flat places and for example on the parts la and ld of the bottom which are relatively slightly inclined, the planes 9 provided in the wall constituting the bottom allowing the laying of gluing boards 12 such as those which are represented. in FIG. 7, the bonding boards being joined by spacers 13 to constitute assemblies 14. It can be seen in FIG. 8 that the assemblies 14 are held in position on the planes 9.

In addition to the actual bonding boards, the inclined edges increase the bonding surface of the snails while allowing, as has been said above, good cleaning of the tank, sufficient spaces between the sets of bonding plates allowing effective cleaning.

Figures 3, 4 and 5 allow a better perception of the geometric shape of the tank. In FIG. 4, we can see in section the chute 10 covered with a grid 11, the chute itself being inclined so as to open outwards through an orifice 15.

The tray on a solid bottom according to the present invention avoids any manipulation during breeding to change any bottom grids.

It goes without saying that modifications can be made to the embodiments which have just been described, in particular by substitution of equivalent technical means, without departing from the scope of the present invention.
