Abstract

A pile (5) of alternately arranged corrugated and flat sheets (2, 3) is produced and subsequently immersed in a synthetic resin bath, in order to impregnate the exposed surfaces of the sheets (2, 3) with synthetic resin. Thereafter, the pile (5) is removed from the bath and exposed to conditions which permit curing of the resin by drying or polymerisation. The resin collects in the contact zones between neighbouring flat sheets (3) and corrugated sheets (2) and forms connecting bridges (9) between these sheets (2, 3). This process allows the cost-saving production of a cellular structure having mechanical and physical properties which are at least equivalent to those of a "honeycomb structure" with the conventional hexagonal cells.

Description

We know that the core materials most used for the development of sandwich elements with high mechanical performance are honeycomb structures, called "honeycombs".

The manufacture of these structures is currently carried out according to two methods: one called "by corrugation", the other "by expansion", and each of them has disadvantages.

In the so-called "corrugation" method, the material, in sheets or in film, after passing through an inverter device, receives on the top of the corrugations a deposit of glue. your corrugated and glued sheets should then be stacked on top of each other, so that each wavy top coincides exactly with the top of the opposite sheet. The assembly must be maintained in this way until the adhesive has dried or polymerized.

This relatively slow production process has been almost completely abandoned in favor of the "expansion" process.

In the "expansion" process, the adhesive is deposited on flat sheets or film using a printing machine which can be used at high speed. The flat sheets are stacked, after gluing, so that the lines of glue deposited by the printer are placed in the adequate places to suffice, after the adhesion of the sheets to each other has been made effective by drying or the polymerization of the adhesive, to exert a traction between the first and last sheets of a block, to obtain, by expansion, the formation of cells with the hexagonal shape.

This process allows a faster manufacturing speed than the corrugation process, but it requires the use of adhesive, the peel strength of which must be higher the more the materials to be expanded are difficult to fold. In addition, knowledge of the most effective adhesives in this area is jealously kept secret by manufacturers of honeycomb structures.

The object of the present invention is precisely to alleviate the difficulties caused, in the "corruption" process, by the need to stack the successive sheets with wavy vertices against opposite vertices and, in the "expansion" process, by fact that we are limited in the choice of base materials due to the weakness of the adhesives making the glued joint.

It relates to a method of manufacturing a honeycomb structure, according to which we stack corrugated sheets which we bind by means of an adhesive coating, -characterized in that we form a stack made up of alternately flat and wavy sheets , and in that a coating is applied to the pile covering all the exposed surfaces of the sheets.

The attached drawing shows, schematically and by way of example, an embodiment of a honeycomb structure at several stages of its manufacture according to the process which is the subject of the invention.

Figures 1 and 2 show in cross section the stack of alternately flat and wavy sheets.

Figure 3 illustrates in perspective the stack obtained.

Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view of a portion of the honeycomb structure obtained by the method.

With reference to the drawing, a honeycomb structure is produced from pairs of sheets i each consisting of a corrugated sheet 2 and a flat sheet 3 glued one against the other.

The pairs of sheets 1 are stacked by alternating the corrugated sheets 2 and the flat sheets 3, and by placing the generatrices of the corrugations 4 of the corrugated sheets 2 substantially parallel to each other. The pile 5 thus obtained is born so that the tops of the corrugations 4 of the corrugated sheets 2 come into contact with the flat sheets 3 a9JaceAtes, zizis is immersed in a bath of synthetic resin. The stack 5 can be clamped by an appropriate tool or by ties 6 surrounding the entire stack. Rigid plates 7 can be placed against two opposite faces of the stack 5 to distribute the tightening force of the links 6. Preferably, these plates 7 are made of a material on which the synthetic resin has no adhesion.

After the synthetic resin has had time to impregnate the sheets 2 and 3, the pile has emerged from the bath and is drained.

It is then placed in conditions allowing the setting of the synthetic resin by drying or by polymerization.

In known manner, the block of honeycomb structure obtained is then cut into boards of desired thickness according to the cutting planes substantially perpendicular to the generatrices of the corrugations 4.

As shown in FIG. 4 which represents the finished product, the synthetic resin forms a layer 8 covering all the exposed surfaces of the sheets 2 and 3. Under the effect of its surface tension in the liquid state and by capillarity, the synthetic resin accumulates in the contact zones between the flat sheets 3 and the corrugated sheets 2 and forms connecting bridges 9 between the corrugated sheets 2 and the adjacent flat sheets 3 when it is dry or polymerized.

The honeycomb structure obtained by the process described above has specific mechanical characteristics similar to those of "honeycomb" structures with hexagonal cells. The anisotropy of the honeycomb structure is however more marked than that of the hexagonal "honeycomb" structures.

The process described makes it possible to obtain, with a lower coat, a honeycomb structure of the same mechanical quality as honeycomb structures with hexagonal cells. Indeed, thanks to the presence of flat sheets 3 between the corrugated sheets 2, the establishment of the successive sheets forming the stack 5 does not require the precise location required to make the adjacent vertices of cells or dlatios coincide, like this. is the case in the usual manufacture of corrugated or expanded "honeycomb" structures. One frees oneself, according to the method described above, from a relatively slow and sophisticated process inherent in the manufacture of "honeycomb" structures with expanded hexagonal cells.

A wide range of materials can be used to develop said structure according to the process described. It is possible to use, for example, sheets or films of plastics, paper, cardboard or metal strips. It becomes possible to economically produce from sheets or films of difficultly foldable materials, honeycomb structures with small corrugations, which is technically excluded, at present, by the process known as "by expansion".

The viscosity and the nature of the synthetic resin bath in which the stack of flat and corrugated sheets forming the block 5 will be immersed will be chosen according to the constituents of the sheets 2 and 3, so that the connection bridges 9 are formed sufficiently effective for ensuring the cohesion of block 5 and communicating to the honeycomb structure, after drying and polymerization of the resin, the desired mechanical and physical characteristics.

There can be many variations in the construction of honeycomb structures according to the method described.

The stack 5 could be produced from flat sheets 3 and corrugated sheets 2 made of different materials.

One could consider stacking corrugated sheets 2 having corrugations 4 of different dimensions in the same stack 5, so as to obtain a honeycomb structure having reinforced areas and lightened areas.

For the same purpose, provision could be made to use sheets of a more rigid or lighter material in the formation of a portion of the stack 5.
