Abstract

The collector consists of a glass tube or vessel with a metal cap provided on at least one end. Cap has a coefft. of thermal expansion (CTE) very similar to that of the glass. Inside vessel is a pipe made of a material which conducts heat, and through which a heat transfer medium is circulated. A plate absorbing solar heat is welded to part of the external surface of pipe. Cap has a base contg. one or more holes in which pipe is welded to make a seal; and a vacuum providing a max. pressure of 0.005 torr is created in cessel. Some pref. designs of collectors include bellows compensating for differences in the CTE of the glass and metal tubes employed in the collector. A mechanically strong collector resistant to thermal shock, and which can be made without overheating plate.
