Abstract
1415811 X-ray tubes MACHLETT LABORA. TORIES Inc 7 Dec 1973 [3 Jan 1973] 56889/73 Heading HID An X-ray tube includes an annular rotating target with a focal track ring 64 on its inner surface, the ring consisting of side-by-side elements which are urged towards the surface 62 by centrifugal force during rotation. The close engagement of wall 60 and ring 64, assisted also by thermal expansion improves heat dissipation. The target may be W, Re-W, Mo or Nb, the cylindrical wall 60 preferably having a higher specific heat than the target material, and being of beryllia, Mo, graphite, boron carbide or pyrolytic graphite which may be matched with W or Mo. The elements may be closely fitted on to surface 62 or in a closely interfitting groove. The pin or rod-like elements may be held by lips (70-71), (Fig. 5, not shown), and are preferably wider at the top to allow for the inclined geometry. The tube may be mounted in housing 10 via lugs 46 and with mechanical shock absorber 47. External connections 32, 56 are to cable horns (12), (14), (Fig. 1, not shown). Relative tensile strengths and heat transfer characteristics are detailed, (Fig. 4, not shown), Be, Al 2 O 3 and Si 3 N 4 also being included and dimensions disclosed. The hollow target may be inverted (Figs. 6-8, not shown) with Mo, graphite, boron carbide or W ring (86) with W or Re-W target ring (90). Disc (84) is transparent to X-rays or a material which filters out certain portions of the X-radiation. Cathode (92) is mounted on bracket (96) secured to terminal structure (98). A safety ring may be applied around the whole target.
