Abstract
The circuit for controlling the operation of an electric discharge lamp includes the lamp itself stabilised by a self-inductance (2) in series compensated by a capacitor (3) in parallel with the self inductance and lamp. An impedance comprising a current transformer (4) is connected in series with the supply line. The secondary winding of this transformer is connected to a self-inductance (5) which may be short-circuited by a switch (6). The assembly is powered by the mains voltage (VR) and provides an operating voltage (VU). If the self-inductance (5) is zero (switch closed) the primary winding of the transformer provides a very small opposing voltage corresponding to the short circuit voltage of the transformer. If the switch is open, the impedance (5) is in use and the demagnetising current passing through the secondary winding diminishes. As a result the primary winding of the transformer provides an opposing voltage. The circuit reduces the power drawn by such a lamp.
