Abstract

This is an addn. to 025267, which used a row of cells to detect the point of inversion of the temp. gradient along a casting pipe, where the lower part of the pipe is immersed in the molten metal in the mould. The novelty in the present invention is that only a single detector cell (11) sensitive to radiation is used; and cell (11) is reciprocated along a straight line to scan an optical image of the surface of the melt in the mould. Cell (11) is pref. a photoelectric cell which is reciprocated while the optical image is stationary. Conversely, the image may be reciprocated while the cell (11) is stationary. A TV camera is pref. used to obtain the image. An optical image (inverted) is obtd. showing the mould (1) inside a cooling jacket (2); and molten metal flows down casting pipe (3) to form metal (7), which is covered by casting powder (8). A single photoelectric cell (11) is reciprocated between points (A,B) on line (X-X) to obtain temp. gradients (T4,T8) which meet at a line (N) representing the height of the melt in mould (1).
