Abstract

A fault detector for a motor vehicle electronic ignition system avoids the use of a voltmeter. The detector contains a circuit to replace the contact breaker and is useful where a contact breaker does not exist. A fault detector circuit (10) has a connector (20) which plugs directly into the connector of an ignition control circuit and is powered from the vehicle battery (11). The ignition system magnetic pulse generator (17) output is connected to a power transistor (T1) and an opto electronic diode (LED1) between its collector and the ignition coil (12) signals that the generator is operating correctly. Back to back green and red opto electronic diodes (LED2,3) indicate when the power supply polarity is correct or inverted. A second power transistor (T2) and associated opto electronic diode (LED4) allows the ignition coil primary to be checked by illumination of the diode when a push button (21) is pressed.
