Abstract

1,245,440. Battery charging circuits; protective arrangements. SOC. DES ACCUMULATEURS FIXES ET DE TRACTION. 30 Dec., 1968 [29 Dec., 1967], No. 61768/68. Headings H2H and H2K. A battery charging circuit includes an arrangement for indicating if the battery has been connected to the charger in the wrong polarity. In the charger shown in Fig. 1, a switch SW1 is used to select the required charging voltage and is ganged with a further switch SW2 which controls the voltage at the base of a transistor T2. If a battery is correctly connected to the output terminals 8, 9, this transistor will remain switched off. However, reverse connection allows the transistor to conduct and so light a lamp L. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), current through the transistor is also arranged to operate a switch which cuts off the charging current until the battery is reconnected correctly or a push-button is operated. A fast-acting magneto-thermal circuit breaker may also be used, Fig. 3 (not shown).
